Per ESPN article:
"The Mountaineers fall to 1-6 in conference play for the first time since 2002. It was West Virginia's last season with Gale Catlett at the helm, losing to St. John's, Notre Dame, Syracuse, Rutgers twice and Seton Hall before beating Providence. WVU would end up going 8-20 that season."

Hall of Fame coach in the same sentence as Coach Catlett in his final year? Not good...not good at all.

I love Coach Huggins. He needs to fix this asap.

Fixing ASAP will not be possible. Catlett's last year was 2001-02 season. Not 2002.

No excuse to be this bad. If Jordan McCabe was top player in Wisconsin that shows how bad high school basketball is in Wisconsin. We’ve got nothing from him and Doomes. Knapper finally showed last night that he is the one who needs more rope and confidence because he is a very good scorer, shooter with quickness, athletic ability. Huggins has literally destroyed Knappers confidence this year. Belien would have built him up. He turns it over but the whole damn team turns it over as well. We need scoring. Knapper brings that. McCabe looks outmatched badly at this level. He’s too small, slow. Doomes is athletic but has no shooting ability at all. This has been bad recruiting by Huggins and his staff. Lazy, bad recruiting. We need to keep Knapper over McCabe. He’s showed it last night. He just needs more confidence.

Everyone talks about lack of guards. True. But what about the lack of small forwards here the last decade. We haven’t had a good wing since Da Butler 10 years ago. That’s on Huggs.

LOL! The worst thing WVU ever did was hire that guy. The best thing that WVU ever did was get lucky when he left after a week. I still can't stand listening to that guy.

I think this is the same scumbag that interviewed for the Marshall hc job several years ago and when he was speaking with the president, the president said that he didn't much care for Bob Knight. With that said, Dakich ended the interview stating he couldn't come to Marshall if that's how you feel.

Huggs is just a little better Catlett. Nothing great about either. Belien was the better coach by miles. Belien blows away Huggs and Catlett combined. Huggs runs us into ground every 4-5 years. No excuse for that.

It was definitely up there. But since I've followed WVU (95, yes i'm still young), they've always been competitive with some up and down years. Huggins' body of work has been extremely solid so if you're gonna write him off now, don't ride his dick when he's got us back in the playoffs.

Look at the body of work. Catlett was nothing special at all but had a tough Big East after move from a very good Atlantic 10 in 1994. He was a below average coach. Belien inherits a mess and quickly built things up. Had he stayed longer he would have been to a couple Finals 4 and several sweet 16 and elite 8 would be every year. He brought terrible Michigan program back and they sucked. They have no better resources than WVU for basketball. They sucked for 15 years until Belien built them back strong.

Huggs 1 year after Final 4 goes through 3 years in a row of crappy basketball. From 2011-2012, 2012-2013, 2013-2014 that was 14 losses or more and a losing record. That’s terrible. Huggs is too much 1st round exits, 2nd round exits, couple years not even making tourney, NIT......this year back terrible. Every 4-5 years he runs us into ground. No excuse. 4 million a year for this?????? Overhyped, overpaid coach!

OP was correct. The year assigned to any basketball season is the one in which it ends, unless both years are referenced (2018-19). WVU's 2010 team made the Final Four. Not its 2009 team.

Well he's sort of right. Catlett was head coach in '02... Drew Catlett that is.

That was the year Ed Pastilong and his cronies slow push out the door began. Dakitch turned around and left when he saw the mess Gale had left, Ed gave the guys on "Statewide Sportsline" a heads up he had Huggins locked up, and the story blew up in Cincy, leading to big "Keep Huggins" rallies downtown. Bob stayed in Cincy while BE member, WVU had to poach a lower mid-major coach in Belien.

It all strangely worked out, Belien saved the basketball program, and when Bob was available after a one year run at K. State, he came home.

Bielein was already kicking butt at Richmond when we hired him away.

And Catlett had a very good career considering he was always in an inferior conference recruiting against the BIG conferences. Especially after the Big East formed and Syracuse kept us out. When we finally joined Catlett quickly made us competitive and was winning. Then he sold his soul in an attempt to recruit the kids he thought could get him/WVU to the Final Four. I understood why he did it.

Bottom line, Catlett was an excellent coach.

WVUALLEN what? All the talk here in North Central WV is that Huggs really screwed up recruiting and that he needs to retire. Some say he sucks and others say he’s washed up or getting washed up. Huggs is getting ripped hard up here. Sucky *** Dana isn’t here anymore to make Bob Huggins look better than he is.

Folks are pissed here in WV. They blame Huggs. They think his coaching style sucks in today’s game. He is back to I’ll fix it bs. Every 4-5 years we suck under Huggs. He’s exposed now and people are ripping him hard. Why deny this? Do you talk WVU hoops with anybody.

The Rams are taking their attention away.
