Ford said today it will invest $1.6 billion to build a new plant in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, that will be manufacturing small cars by 2018, making it the latest automaker to expand its presence there. Ford's investment in Mexico will create more than 2,800 jobs by 2020, delivering a blow to the UAW. Today’s announcement...is a disappointment and very troubling," UAW President Dennis Williams said in a statement. "For every investment in Mexico it means jobs that could have and should have been available right here in the USA." Union leaders often say automotive jobs are going to Mexico because of the North American Free Trade Agreement that was signed into law in 1993 by U.S. President Bill Clinton. "This is another example of what’s wrong with NAFTA and why the TPP would be a disaster for the citizens of the United States," the UAW's Williams said Tuesday. "Companies continue to run to low-wage countries and import back into the United States."

And this doesn't even compare to all the business that Hillary and Bill sold off to the Chinese.

I never did like NAFTA (and yes, I'm a democrat). Nabisco announced last week they were building a plant in Mexico instead of expanding in the US, to make Oreos.

To be fair.....Bush senior pushed this deal. I always thought it would hurt us more than it helped us.

These Fair Trade deals have been lobbied hard by the pro business lobbyists and the unions have largely opposed them. Fundamentally, they are generally gop supported. But it is true Clinton pushed hard for Nafta and he owns it.

This is why it hurts us the most; The average Mexican worker assembling vehicles or making parts earns $7.79 per hour including benefits, according to the Center for Automotive Research. That's substantially less than $37.38 in the U.S. and $39.04 in Canada.

I was 32 when the pointy eared fellow of Entebbe fame pulled out all the downward pointing charts. Most people I spoke with agreed that he made sense, but that if Dems and Reps so fervently agreed that NAFTA was the way to go, then It had to be good, right? We should have known we were in for a screwing, and yet we still largely vote based on hair styles and false promises. Gruber was right, we're stupid en masse.
