Graham was actually a defensive coach when he arrived at Tulsa as Kraigthorpe's Defensive Coordinator. He had been the Defensive Coordinator for Rich Rodriguez at West Virginia. He used a 3-3-5 stack defense that gave up a lot of rushing yards. I think at some point in his career as a head coach Graham decided that the best defense was to score 1 more point then the opposing team. That worked very well for three of the four years that Graham was the Tulsa head coach. Also, he turned over the offense for two years to an offensive genius, Gus Malzahn. Those teams were fun to watch.Nice to see a coach that knows what it takes to be relevant on offense. Bring it to Tulsa but keep the defense staff, they can coach. I like Monty as a fine man but unless Tulsa moves back in the top 5 in the AAC is Tulsa relevant.
The only year TU struggled under Graham was the year between Malzahn and Morris as the OCs in which Graham decided to call plays himself.Graham was actually a defensive coach when he arrived at Tulsa as Kraigthorpe's Defensive Coordinator. BTW, I believe that team actually wins more games than it loses IF GJ doesn't get hurt in the OSU game that kicked at midnight. AND, we recover an onside kick against Houston. Seriously, that loss to Houston in the last second deflated that team and they simply didn't recover.
Hogan smashed that ball. I still feel bad for Dexter McCoil because I know that one moment still eats at him despite what he did the rest of his career at TU. The fact he was able to come back and play the way he did the rest of that year and the following 3 years is a testament to his mental toughness.I absolutely hate it because it was Houston, but I will admit that it was the best kick I’ve ever seen. That one would have been good from at least 60.
