If your goal is to determine the best team in the country, then seed the 16 highest ranked teams 1-16, no moving seeds to accomodate conference rematches or whatever. If your conference champion isn't in the top 16 then they weren't going to win the title anyway, so who cares that they were 17th or 18th or 29th

At large bids makes the most sense (in an ideal world.) I feel like no matter what we get it'll be the big 2 trying to just get as many as possible into it.

I feel like the best system is go back to conferences as they were 2010 or 2014 and award spots mostly to conference winners, and a few at large bids. This would bring us closer to making the regular season have value as opposed to what is happening now. If you limit spots to the top 2 in conference then every game matters. Basing it on conference record also invites more people to play fun OOC games.

SEC and B1G want multiple autobids. Per Ross Dellenger, from Feb - Leaders in each conference have spent the last several weeks evolving a format idea — multiple automatic qualifiers per league — into a more realistic proposal. The 14- or 16-team model would grant four automatic qualifiers each to the SEC and Big Ten; two each to the ACC and Big 12; and one to the highest-ranked Group of Five champion. It includes one or three at-large spots, one of those intended for Notre Dame if it finishes ranked inside the top 14 — a guarantee specifically designated for the Irish that is part of the CFP memorandum.

this is no longer true, according to SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey himself just yesterday:

Sankey said he and Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti spoke four out of five days last week and acknowledged the SEC's "different view" coming out of its spring meetings in Destin, Florida. While the Big Ten has favored a model that rewards conferences with guaranteed spots and play-in games to determine them, the SEC coaches most recently said they would now prefer a 16-team format that includes the five highest-ranked conference champions and 11 at-large bids.

I imagine the “play-in” games are the deal breaker in the guaranteed spots option.

highest ranked G5 champ

byes will be doled out to the top 4 teams in the CFP poll
I’m still in favor leaving it to 12 but the SEC and B1G want more of their teams in it isn’t going to make it better.

Highest rated G5 Champ shouldn’t get a home game when they do go to 16 teams.

I like the guaranteed spots because it ensures that you don't get an overload of teams from one or two conferences. Assessing the relative strength of teams across conferences is not easy with so few meaningful non-conference games played. Guaranteed spots also opens up a play in game weekend which to me would be much more interesting than conference championships only. The counter arguement is that there will be auto bid teams that get in that are not really top 16 or whatever, and they will be forced to go on the road and probably get hammered. I suspect we will get 5+ whatever - if that's done then I hope the money per conference from the playoffs is capped. I don't one conference getting half the playoff money based on a popularity contest.

There's a push for the sec to move to 9 conference games to get guaranteed spots which I agree would be more equal. Also we want guaranteed spots since the big 10 is arguably the best conference right now. If they refuse 9 conference games than make it big 10 having 4 guaranteed spots, sec 3 spots, 1-2 for acc and big12 and the rest at large.
