This is a discussion, not a ranking or a competition. Tastes will vary and there are no wrong submissions as long as you propose the actual correct opening lyrics.

My first submission:

“Well I woke up Sunday morning, with no way to hold my head that didn’t hurt.”
- Kris Kristofferson

In ancient times
Hundreds of years before the dawn of history
Lived a strange race of people
The druids
No one knows who they were
Or what they were doing
But their legacy remains hewn
Into the living rock of Stonehenge

Not actual opening lyrics to the song but always the live show opening lyrics:

You know where you are?
You're in the jungle baby!
Time to dieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from Hell? Blue skies from pain?
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil? Do you think you can tell...

My life motto….

A little out of place
A little out of tune
Sorta lost in space
Racin' that moon
Climbin' the walls
Of a hurricane
Still overall
I can't complain

I've been run down
I've been lied to
And I don't know why
I let that mean woman make me a fool
She took all my money
Wrecked my new car
Now she's with one of my good time buddies
They're drinkin' in some crosstown bar

"Please allow me to introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
I've been around for a long, long year
Stole many a man's soul and faith."

- Mick Jagger/The Rolling Stones
Love this song, A comment on the YT clip with Papa from Ghost singing this with the Hellacopters lives in my head. “When I hear Mick sing this it’s like the devil is dropping hints at who he is. When Papa sings it it’s like a list of accomplishments.”

Not sure if I should say:

Creepy, yet real f’g good or

Magnificent, yet about as creepy as a song can be

“list of accomplishments” is a perfect description

Tobias Forge is an amazing performer. Everything about Ghost is super contrived but the dude has made his mark and plays the character very well.

It is Lucifer singing the song. As a Stones fan since they arrived in the US in 1964 and I got to see them then and every year since, all the Stones songs have some great opening lyrics. Talk abut creepy, listen to the live version of Midnight Rambler on the "Get Yer Ya-Yas Out" LP. Wear head phones so you can hear what some in the crowd are yelling. And here's another great Stones song.

Yeah, you got satin shoes
Yeah, you got plastic boots
Y'all got cocaine eyes
Yeah, you got speed freak jive, now
Can't you hear me knockin'
On your window?
Can't you hear me knockin'
On your door?
Can't you hear me knockin'
Down your dirty street?
Yeah

And again from The Doors.

Oh, keep your eyes on the road, your hand upon the wheel
Keep your eyes on the road, your hand upon the wheel
Yeah, we're goin' to the Roadhouse, gonna have a real, a good time
Yeah, the back of the Roadhouse they got some bungalows
Yeah, the back of the Roadhouse they got some bungalows
And that's for the people who like to go down slow

And one of the greatest rock songs every from the Byrds. Really takes me back in time.

Eight miles high, and when you touch down
You'll find that it's stranger than known
Signs in the street, that say where you're going
Are somewhere just being their own

The screen door slams
Mary's dress sways
Like a vision, she dances across the porch as the radio plays.
