PA's new Dem governor wants to impose a production tax on oil and gas. This will mean more development activity in WV.

The oil and gas isn't going anywhere.

They can pick the low hanging fruit first but eventually they'll pay what they have to pay.

Oil and gas production taxes make up a pretty sizeable portion

county tax bases already...Do those counties really want to lose that base because some commie governor got greedy.

it's a bit of a double edged sword

It's good for the tax base and all of that, but the majority of the workers are not WVians, they come from OK and TX. You can hardly get a hotel room in the Clarksburg/Bridgeport area because they are full of the oil and gas workers.

Then there is also more congestion on the roads, as well as having a lot of the scenery broken up by new wells popping up everywhere. There is also a lot more damage to the roads, and incidental damage from the big trucks rolling out and kicking up rocks onto people's cars.

Overall, I do believe it's a net positive, but it doesn't come without a lot of new inconveniences.

How is that land taxed when the value of the resource is so unknown prior to development?

Re: it's a bit of a double edged sword

I never understood the issue about workers not being from here. They are working here and alot are relocating here. They are taxes here and they spend money here. Over time our workforce is transitioing to those jobs.

In pa the townships control taxing the operators to maintain the roads and they control the routes that all traffic to and from sites can use so the operators pay to maintain the local roads and the extraction taxes stay local instead of disappearing into the state budget. It also give townships and counties more control over permitting. That part can be a pain for operators but it gives the affected people more say in what happens around them.
