Sounds like he is thriving under the new coaches. If I remember correctly, people were throwing in the towel on him last year. He's always had the ability, just needs the attitude and some coaching.

I think Inside Linebacker fits him better. Like you said he’s always had the talent. He may have been in the wrong position and of course not the best DC to help things. Bray wasn’t bad but we/he needed better. I really expect to see a completely different defense this year from last. We will look a lot different when all players are buying in and working together.

It could have been all in his head, but hopefully the unhitched the plow. After his frosh year, he has always been at least 2 steps behind. Some of that had to do with coaching and thinking to much, but hopefully he gained a little more burst.

His issues arise from dealing poorly with adversity. When the team was struggling, he really turned down his intensity, and even dogged it on the field. On one hand, he needs to be a better leader and give it his all on every snap, regardless of the scoreboard.

On the other hand, it can be difficult to care when your defensive line is getting shredded, your defensive backs can't cover, and your defensive coordinators don't have a clue how to stop air.

He looks very lost and dejected against Tennessee in 2016. Was disappointing to see.... can't recall something similar last year... but everyone else was so bad across the board that his poor play didn't stand out to me

Ruud has been very complimentary of him. I don't think we can accurately judge what we saw from our defensive players last year. That was just a cluster.... He's fast enough to be a very good inside linebacker IF the scheme and coaching is acceptable.

Young may be a decent enough player with proper coaching, but he needs to put some fire into his game. I blame coaches for most of last few years but havent seen Young’s passion shine. Always seemed to be going through the motions. A guy can be quiet, but still needs to show some swagger on the field and make teams afraid to run at him. I’m hoping new coaching brings out a new Young.

If Young can up his game a level, the fact that can play both ILB spots would be big. The trio of Young Honas and Mo should produce solid play inside. Gifford will play a lot at OLB. Just need someone to take the other OLB spot and be an emerging star.

Question for those who know. Does Dixon play on the same side as Gifford.

I hope Young turns it around but I've seen enough bad/uninspired play from him that I won't believe any of the talk until he shows something on the field.

For the most part, Young is who he is - a serviceable, average, assignment sound LB. He may play a little better this year but wouldnt expect too much or we would have seen flashes the last couple years even if he was poorly coached.

He is like a few others on this team in that they have had a lot of opportunities to prove themselves and have not made the most of it. Unless there isn't anyone else capable behind him, I would like to see someone else get a chance to play. Of course, with this new staff, there should be some substituting so that if a guy appears to be out of shape, playing hurt tired, lack of effort, mental mistakes, finger pointing, head hanging and pouting body language (all of which was commonly seen with Callahan, Bo and Riley defenses), then someone else will be subbed in.

Will Young be in better shape and play harder? Be aggressive and fill the correct hole? If he does that, then maybe he will finally play well consistently in his fourth year starting, but if the team falls behind I'm not sure that will happen.

Young had 80 tackles last year. Demorrio Williams had 92 his junior year.

Not saying Young is a future NFL star, but things might not be as bad as people are claiming. A coaching change could mean he's suddenly motivated and in the right place to be successful.

The staff has spoken well of Young. He will play a lot.

I'd also like to see a new guy step up but don't know if that will happen. Young did look like he made some improvement in the spring game and didn't see any other guys at his position that were all that impressive.

I have a feeling some of these guys that were written off in the past, including by me, could turn out to be good players for us this year. Like after 2007 when it looked like we had nothing on our defense, but just a year later we had guys like Suh, Dillard, and even Asante who got a lot better.

He quit on his team a couple of times last year and the year before that. Not a fan of kids who don't care about themselves or their teammates enough to give 100% at all times on the field. I hope the kid has changed his ways...but I doubt it !!

Guessing you don’t care for a single defender on last year’s team then, either...
