Looks good vs. UNCW caliber teams, but when it's time to play at B1G level, he's not the quality of big we need. Love the guy's heart, but he's too slow and not close to athletic enough to match up with the type of talent he'll see for the remainder of the season. Would rather see us playing Sa, Diallo, etc more from here on out. Doorson also is not athletic enough and really doesn't belong on the floor.

Gettys wasnt even a star at Wilmington, I think people got too caught up in what he did against weak competition. He will be okay against some Big 10 schools but some others will be nightmares for him. Just accept what he is and isnt and not beat him up too much when he plays poorly

The more relevant issue is that Rutgers had no inside scoring presence other than making some foul shots in the first half.Rutgers is offensively challenged which becomes far more difficult to overcome against stronger competition.

thats my concern. Sa hopefully picks up the slack. It was good Diallo got minutes. Jury still out on what Doorson can contribute other than a dunk every two games

The big ten hAs maybe 3 bugs better than Delgado. Relax.
This. Gettys couldn't finish and as the game went on he looked intimidated. He needs to turn that around. And he needs to dunk it instead of laying it up. I counted at least two he missed doing that. And if you're going to challenge Delgado in the paint you need to use your bigger body going up. I saw at least four times where Gettys could have gotten the call against Delgado by going into him and up.

Exactly. Or just dont bad mouth him at all.

He is a great kid, who has helped brnig back the RAC.Accept him for what he is, and be realistic. Thank you,Gettys.

I like Gettys. He offers us 5 fouls and they are usually hard, he bangs and will make a shot or two. And yes, he's not a B1G starter quality. But who didn't know that? This thread could have been titled: Gettys, he is what we thought he was.

Even with his bad game, he is more valuable to us than almost any other school he could have chosen. Glad he's here.

Here's the problem with the theory in this thread: Many posters ( I don't think most) despite always issuing a disclaimer about how weak the schedule has been, really got caught up in the toxic game of increased expectations. Gettys got PLENTY of looks today and should have hit a few of them. Case closed. It started to get painful to watch.

Of course his main contribution will be some rebounding and his five fouls to give. Obviously. But it's not too much to ask him to hit a couple of those looks. And if it is, yikes.

Games like this remind us that we have a ways to go. But .500 looks more doable after being in the game at SHU till late.

While Gettys did not have one of his best games, he brings a lot to the table. I will reserve judgment until much further into the season. I love his intensity, enthusiasm and maturity on the court. I believe we will still see some great games from him this season.

I think this was learning experience for our guys too. They were up big at halftime and it seemed like they played like they were up 9 on Fordham instead of a better team. The good news, is I know Pike will tell them this and show them why they must fight for every possession of 40 minutes to win tough games, especially on the road. I will give them a pass on Tuesday (@ #11 Wisconsin - what a start to B1G play) and by pass I mean I will have NO expectations going in (unlike tonight where some of us sadly started to get a little too cocky, myself included), and then we'll go from there. This team will be hard to beat at the RAC.

For ****'s sake people, he had a bad game against a very good big man and you're already turning on him? I wanted this win as much as anyone, but our team has played together for all of 13 games under a new coach and system. Willard has had his team in place and has a future pro in Carrington and perhaps Delgado. We won the first half, got torched in the second. Winning is mindset and a culture, and we are in the process of acquiring it. But can we stop throwing our guys under the fvcking bus when they have a bad game? He's a Scarlet Knight, so he's one of the good guys.

This guy picks us for his 5th year and at worst will be a key rotation big man the rest of the way.

He also delivered albeit against weaker comp helping us sit with 11 wins in December.

Can we for once focus on the positive here?

Amazing. One loss & the some on board are back to be the same old rude fans.

Gettys is who he is. He is the best we have while Sa, Diallo and Doorson develop.(and we recruit a quality BIG) He looked frustrated tonight & did VERY little....if we had someone better we would be playing him...

Shoe won the BE last year & is a very good team. It was a HUGE game..a sellout !
The guys did better than I expected most of the game......gives me hope for maybe 4 wins in the BE

Gettys is what he is. Very slow, unathletic and limited. He is best suited in a backup role, but he can bang and should be able to draw some more Fouls in b10 games that are slowed down and come down to less possessions. Would be nice to see Diallio get more minutes going forward.

Gettys is here so Doorson and Diallo have a little more time to develop.
Both had injuries last year that slowed their progress .
No one should think Gettys is going to be more than a big body RU needs
to fill the big man role until they can take over.
He's doing what was expected of him when he came to RU to play and that's all we should expect.

I'm shocked at the treatment of Gettys here.

He's not an athlete or scorer but you realize his height, weight and IQ was a big reason that Delgado and Desi Rodriguez struggled so badly in their FG% tonight. You don't have a 9 point halftime lead without him.

I don't have time to do so but I'd suggest folks look at Delgados season FG pct (safely above 50%) and compare it his first half. Think it was about 30%. Same for Desi. They both missed tons of bunnies while Gettys clogged the paint.

Shots not falling in close while playing against a step-up in competition are often due to the step-up in competition itself. The need to move more quickly and avoid more athletic defenders stealing or blocking leads to misses, as well as blocks and strips. In short, you're not as athletic or quick and your height advantage isn't as significant and you run into all sorts of problems. We're seeing this with Freeman too.

But Gettys kept banging.

I am encouraged by his play actually, He showed me the ability yesterday to create his own shot against a quality big, he just didnt finish. CJ has a good understanding of the game, is a good passer, and has the ability to make some shots. He needs the confidence to use those qualities. His footwork and hands are pretty good, he just cant get off the floor. I would like to see him take the 15 footer when it is there, he has a good touch. Bigs can mature very late, I think there is more here then we seen.

What did that have to do with him missing an uncontested layup on his drive. Or his open 13 elbow jumper when he was wide open or his air ball from 4 feet that went 2 feet. He has not scored a lot in most games this year and if he makes just the uncontested shots last night we likely win . The competition will ratchet up but last night's game did not have another 7 footer guarding him like Purdue or Indiana will have. He just had a bad game with no rebounds or assists . He will help us a lot if he can continue to back down his man and hit his soft hook shot.

Everything is offense around here.....Gettys occupies space and battles for rebounds on the defensive end and probably took away a couple of extra buckets in the first half by playing good positional defense.

SHU adjusted and made the guards dump the ball into CJ and took their chances that CJ would beat them. He missed a few, but that's part of the process.....if CJ was a finisher and hit those shots, he would not have landed at NC Wilmington, he would have been at another B1G program.

Folks, Delgado is a true PF, not a Center by trade, but has all the tools against a bigger and not as mobile defender....there are kids like Swanigan at Purdue and the Boilermakers other Center Haas, that are true 6'11 , 7'0" power players that are capable of 20 and 15 like Delgado showed last night.....Gettys kept Shaq pinned to the bench, he was in position most of the night on defense and got pinned with some bad calls defensively.

It's not the offense, it's the defense and Gettys is our best option because he understands rotations, boxes out and fights for rebounds. I don't have a plus-minus item, but until Shaq and Diallo are better defensively, Gettys is our guy.

AND...last night essentially sealed how critically important the commitment was of Mamadou Doucoure as a 6'9 225-230 power forward earlier this week, it is a HUGE pickup.....if he doesn't score more than 5PPG as a freshman next year, fine with me.....but his tape shows foot quickness, ability to defend, rebound and he competes defensively like Gettys has done all year for RU, just a step or two quicker/faster....... This game is a 20 point game if Gettys isn't on the roster, amazed people are getting on Gettys here......sure, he got excited making some moves outside of the offensive game plan, but that's life in the Big Ten or against legitimate competition. He'll help us for 18 B1G games, we are not winning more than 3 games the rest of the year, if he is not on the court.

He had a very bad game offensively, especially missing easy chippies, and he had a subpar game defensively, making a couple of dumb fouls, not always boxing out well, and not being quick enough to cover Delgado. We knew this would likely happen against very athletic bigs, but, there aren't that many guys like Delgado around, even in the B1G.

Also, I'm confident that it was the combo of a bad matchup and a bad game, i.e., Gettys is capable of playing better than he did last night in that situation - sometimes **** happens. CJ has been a major plus this year and I think he'll continue to be, but people also shouldn't be expecting his stats to be as good as they were against some serious scrub teams.
