Geo Baker is a warrior and great player and representative of Rutgers. He's playing like crap. Let's all hope he pulls out of it. But I'm grateful for what he brought to Rutgers and what he exemplifies as a student athlete and leader. And I applaud his bravery for speaking up about issues he cares about. The reason we associate bravery with speaking up is because you make yourself a target for classless jerks on message boards to attack your character.

I don't think he got along with Young. He has had some tremendous clutch moments for RU - but as a 5th year senior, his performance first 4 games has been dreadful against garbage teams. Like many have said, he looks like he's checked out. His body language doesn't help either, though he's always kinda had that "only half into it" look.

Rutgers basketball is dead again.
That’s a really sad, bitter pill to swallow.
We are a bad team with guys who played tonight who wouldn’t start at Montclair State.
I’m far more concerned about that than Geo

Classless jerks on message boards attack his character ... and the entirety of sports media treated him as a celebrity and hailed him as a civil rights leader. Brave choice.

EDIT: Oh, and he contributed to probably wrecking the sport and ruined educational opportunities for countless future college athletes.

Anybody know what the deal was when he pulled his hammy (by looks of it) and he was really chirping the ref it looked like? Annoyed game wasn't stopped?

I agree with OP except for the first sentence.
This. His play of last couple of years has been anything but that of a stud. He can do whatever the hell he wants off the court as long as it doesn't embarrass the team or be a detriment to the team. (The NIL thing doesn't qualify unless it became a distraction to his play. But since that's behind him and his play is still the same "yuk" 7 of the 10 halves so far...)

He was yelling at the ref that the was hurt and the ref was like "what you want me to do" when clearly the ref can stop the game for an injured player.

I think the ref didn't think he was all that hurt until he saw him try to go back down the court

Sucks for Geo to get injured. I like the kid and appreciate what he’s done here regardless of where we are right now.

The young man was crying as he walked off the court last night. Think he was feeling the pressure?

We are bitching and complaining as sport fans like to do, but it has to be far more disappointing for these players who had such lofty goals.

I could give two sh*ts about NIL. He is still a young man trying his best to do what he thinks is right for his teammates. Life hands you a sh*t sandwich at times. None of us is immune. It is never easy to handle it.

That’s what it looked like. Saw him trying to run with the trainers under the stands, but from his “body language” (which our fans obsess over) his actual body wasn’t having it.

Let’s dispense with the Geo warrior talk and ask a basic question.

Do we beat UMASS on Saturday?

I like our chances better if Geo doesn’t play.
I don’t like our chances in that situation. Could have used him down the stretch last night.

I am grateful that he played on two tournament teams and for that he’s a rutgers great . But student athlete? Cmon he was leading the charge for guys to get paid and referred to hoops as modern day slavery. I am not saying he’s wrong , but we need to stop the nonsense student-athlete term

I am pulling for Geo as well. I appreciate what he has done here. Him and Pikiell have both aged a bit while being here. Let's not forget the overtaking it was, and the pressure put on this job. Look at Geo his freshman year to now. And then Pikiell! Holy cow.

My respect continued after exploring New Hampshire this summer and passing by his hometown of Derry!

Never forget this! Corey Sanders was deferring to Geo Baker!

Ok. I agree that term needs a rethink. But you can still be a student-athlete and also a pro or semi-pro athlete. What needs to be rethought is that idea that student athlete means amateur. They are no longer amateur. But any Rutgers player is still 100% a student, going to class, and making progress toward a degree.

I thought he would be driving and pulling up and scoring for 3 more years.
Seems like that part of his game peaked early for some reason.

I hope down the road the academic requirements are lifted and players don't have to work towards a degree. No more scholarship either but there would be no point to it as all an athlete would have to do is focus on their sport. The school provides a venue to showcase their talent.

I mean, afterall, we've been told countless times now the scholarship is essentially worthless in terms of what players want. So just let them train, play, sell stupid looking t-shirts and showcase the fruits of that labor for a professional deal. If it doesn't pan out (as it won't for 99%) then join the work force as a "High School Graduate/Some College" like anybody else.

After a few cycles of this we'll see how "worthless" the scholarship is.

I don't think Baker is fully recovered from last years injuries. He lacks the quickness to dribble drive to the basket and has great difficulty making the step back jump shot.Harper also has back pains which clearly impacts his performance.Bottom line without the two top scorers performing at a high level Rutgers offense will have great difficulty scoring 60 points on a regular basis and wins will be difficult to achieve.

I know what you are saying. His strides even were so much different.

I think part of it had to do with not having to be the guy that freshman year with Sanders here. That was A LOT of pressure of Geo.

Having to be that person can be stressful. Just look at Geo freshman year to now. His disposition has changed a lot, and even aged.

Athletes tend to put the same, or more pressure on themselves than the average person. It is hard, and I think Geo is still stressed. I hope he is being good to himself.

I think working towards agree should be optional . If a kid like Myles Johnson wants to take school seriously , that should be encouraged.

While captain, he led his team single handedly to many clutch performances, and an NCAA appearance. I hope he still has more good games in front of him.

Maybe he is exhausted from the pressure?

Remember who started this program in the right direction for the first time in decades.

Geo Baker.
