I'm not even sure at this point that paying 2 5 stars for their freshman years is a wise financial decision. It's almost like you need to limit your investments in highly touted freshmen in favor of proven college players. Would you rather spend $1mm on a freshman that could easily struggle or 2 proven backcourt players? For every Jazzy Davidson there are probably 10 Addie Deals.
Do you believe Iowa was still in the thick of it with Lewis and Bjorn to the very end before they committed?
If so, how would you reconcile that if one or both selected IA also?
Was thinking Jan placed lower values on them to effectively take IA out of the running.
However, I know Jan went to see Jenica play not to long before see committed to ND.
Plus, Jan and Abby went to see Bjorn in-home sometime around when McW had her official visit.
I would say that indicates Jan was still serious about landing both of them.
Seems like some serious cash for the 3 of them in the same frosh class.
Maybe the Deal situation will make her rethink her path (unknown HS dev vs proven portal) going forward to more of what you stated.
EDIT: Just recalled I came across this woman who got some insight as to what's going on with players and coaches now.
Iowa’s Transfer Exodus & The Portal Problem Explained | Court Vision Breakdown / Just Woman's Sports
What players are doing:
"@7:40[ Well actually I was talking about other people during the tournament about decisions that players are making now because of the transfer portal. Like you might decide like the most important thing as a player is going to a program where you can have playing time because you might go to a program, get the playing time, showcase what you can offer, and then do all that only with the goal of being able to hit the transfer portal and get the bag. So, if you're at a program where you're not even playing and you average 2.5 points per game, when you hit the portal, you can't demand 300,000. But you at a program where you're averaging, you know, 19 points per game and playing all the time, there's, you know, at least the mid- major to a contending team that's going to bring you in for 250 to $400,000 and want you to come to their program and contribute seven points per game for that bag. Yeah. So, like you might be making decisions not even about like what program you're joining. You're making a decision on what program best sets me up to hit and make the hit the lotto in the portal. Which program best sets me up for the portal? Wow. That could be your mindset. Yeah."
What coaches are doing:
"@8:46 Crazy. And then it also affects coaching. So, I was talking with coaches who was like, "We don't recruit projects anymore. We We're not in the business of that. If you're g we don't we'd rather actually get a transfer player than a freshman that needs work because a transfer player can help impact whatever we trying to do in this season right now versus I bring in a freshman develop them for a season and then someone else takes them when they're ready to really be good. Never thought about it like that. Interesting. So, even like how you recruit and it's a skill now to be a coach who can hit the portal, get a certain kind of kid and turn out individual successful seasons and like that's the goal. Like what is what's going to happen in this next season? Who do I got? And how do we go far in it? And like that's a skill set."
