I am 100% that the new president of PU that started in 1937 really had it out for athletics and did not support that team and that is why they have been in a death spiral for almost 100 years.
It really has, those schools at that time had it all and then they made the HUGE mistake of not seeing that the future of college money was going to be football.
****, with NIL now, the IVY league schools, could in theory, start to get amazing recruits with all their alum cash...they won't but they could.
Most of the Catholic teams were inner-city schools, and were land-locked. Fordham in the Bronx, Marquette in Milwaukee. Etc.
Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass, is one of the most beautiful schools in the country. No way they could make money because of the terrain.
Side Note for Holy Cross, Gordy Lockbaum. He played both offense and defense the entire game his senior year. Came in 3rd place in the Heisman (Bo Jackson won that year).
In his senior season of 1987, he rushed for 403 yards on 85 carries, and caught 77 passes for 1152 yards, amassing 2041 all-purpose yards and again scoring 22 touchdowns,[9] while continuing to play defense and special teams. Oh yeah, for sure a lot of them are sort of landlocked. Which would have made it difficult for sure.
