Based on who is currently on the roster and who is signed for ‘22, what are the biggest areas of need to complete the class and how many will be signed?

I know everyone is wanting a portal QB and portal OL. How many? How many HS signees?
Curious to see the thoughts here. Thanks

Who is mostly likely to head out that will allow the team to get to 85 and below to bring in more talent? Honas is one what others are likely

I'll be surprised if we have a bunch more attrition. There could be some kids who decide at Christmas break to leave. Maybe a couple after spring ball. If we lose guys after spring ball though I think a move down a level would be in their future. I believe that the number of kids who are still looking for a scholarship in the portal will discourage a lot of kids from leaving now. I believe that is why Payne decided to return.

I suspect there will be some guys who have already burned 4 years of a scholarship will be told that they've used up their Nebraska scholarship and it's time to move on.

Does anyone have numbers on where we are at with scholarships? I read one article that said we were 3 over which the B1G allows. With all the coming and going, I have no clue what the exact number is.

People still want a QB and some O and D linemen, which I understand but do we have room?

Latest I’ve seen is 89 based on a couple of websites including rivals.

I can see about 4-6 more guys leaving but that would only leave us room for a guy or two so that should be a QB and an OL. Honestly, you have to have guys like Walker, etc leave as 5 years with zero contribution is plenty.
Most likely to leave are guys going into their 3rd year or later that really haven’t even sniffed the field. That basically narrows it to about 20 guys so we shall see.

I didn't think we could have over 88 scholarships out there. This seems a lot to keep up with. So a guy who puts his name in the Portal is considered gone right then and there but in the case of Payne, if he comes back you add them back in or were they ever off the total?

All the talk about adding players is great but you are going to have to have some leave first and that may not happen so you are kind of stuck. Managing a roster is a giant headache.

According to the OWH, we have 86 scholarship players for 2022. This includes:
11 incoming freshmen +22 redshirt freshmen
27 sophomores
12 juniors
14 seniors

This list includes Chris Walker, Deontre Thomas, Will Honas and Matt Sichterman. Honas is seeking a waiver, but if denied he is off list. Sichterman said he is done playing football. Is he still getting a scholarship until he is done with school? I thought Deontre Thomas said he was leaving. Walker walked on senior day. I believe every other player who walked all ended up leaving, so I would guess he is also off the list. However, I don't see Furman kicker Pankratz, and I don't believe he is walking on.

Nevertheless, our scholarship numbers are likely to drop to 82 or 83, room enough to sign a quarterback and linemen.

Some of the juniors and seniors have been at NU for 4 years. IF they are non-contributors their scholarship likely won't be renewed for a 5th year. B1G rules I believe stipulate that it's a 4 year scholarship when a kid signs with a B1G school.

I already mentioned Chris Walker. Are you referring to Tate Wildeman, Eteva Mauga-Clements, or Nadab Joseph? They are the only 2022 juniors and seniors that do not contribute much. The only likely one in that group is Tate Wildeman, and he is still a junior.

So be specific-- which "juniors and seniors" are you referring to?

I would have to go through the roster man by man and I'm too tired and lazy to do that. I've heard rumors that there are some guys who will likely be leaving but I'm not going to call them out by name. We put some walk ons on scholarship who may have been one year deals. I also think Cerni and Pyrstup will be gone and I'm pretty sure they're both on scholarship. Culp I'm sure will leave as well.

Here is your current list. Culp and Pyrstup are not on it.

I also included the Journal Star list. They have a more accurate 89 on the list, which include our latest signings in Johnson and Jenkins, plus Nouri, who was a walk on and received a scholarship.

So who are these "juniors and seniors" (both plural)?

Did they not increase the 'ship limits when they gave everyone a free year?

It's not 89 like Sean has it when I looked a few days ago. I didn't go through to see if names were on there that shouldn't be for next year. We are at about 84 so there is plenty of room to bring in another 4, 5, or 6.

The Journal Star seems to be most accurate, lists all the freshmen. The big question are those seniors - Honas, Walker and others that are listed and questionable. It would seem that to manage these things on the safe side you would more likely end up under the number. Until something is set in concrete, the number apparently is 89.

Don’t want to kick guys out and end their time with the Huskers on a negative note. That said if they haven’t contributed on the field in games and at practice have been extras basically, then asking them to move on and we will help you find a place, seems to be a good thing to do. Help them find a place to transfer that has a degree they want where they can succeed on the field as well. Win win option.

I read that they were not doubting super seniors to the 85 through this past season but now the 85 limit will apply to the 2022 season and forward.

Then you are getting rid of half the team, including walk ons as they are extras as well and have not contributed.

Every year it's the same story. People get their tits in the wringer about being over the limit and every year there's attrition that the coach's expected and we didn't know about. Every year in fall camp it seems we have open scholarships we can give to deserving walk ons. IF we can land a QB, there will be room. I think we're probably full other than a QB and maybe an O lineman in the portal but that could change after spring ball.
