Maryland HC Locksley claims NIL cost him his locker room. IMO, NIL is absolutely creating an environment of haves and haves-not. No question, and not really looking for a debate of whether it is a good thing or not. My question is how many coaches will use NIL imbalances to justify poor coaching/recruiting?

Locksley has always sucked worse than Linda Lovelace. Had a 'decent' 3-year run with Tua's brother at QB, but still no winning conference record in his career.

Terps were never a good fit for this conference. I highly doubt he has another winning record for however long they decide to keep him. Good recruiter, (even though most of this area's elite talent goes elsewhere) is very popular within the DMV, that's about all he really has going for him.

I think Maryland has been a different breed anyway. When they joined the Big Ten from the ACC they were very cash poor. Their cheapness cost them a basketball coach who took the Villanova job after just 3 years at Maryland because their AD wouldn't commit the Rev Share dollars to basketball needed to maintain that same level. That being said, Locksley is more a media darling than anything. He has always had some ability as a recruiter, but it seems like he was never able to take those great players and make great teams. I don't think he lost the room because of NIL, he just makes promises to get a few great players and then plays them over other players regardless of team success. This wasn't just the 2024 season, he has done it his whole career, NIL is just legal payment so it is easy to blame NIL.

Locksley is a recruiter and not a team builder. The guy won two games total at New Mexico. I can't believe any coach would willingly admit that he lost his team. That would not be something that I would want to admit to. Volunteering that kind of information will stay with him forever.

Actually it’s one of these subjects that both can be true . NIL can absolutely ruin your locker room if used not correctly. As @Tuco Salamanca said he just used it incorrectly to get players and put it over the team success and also it’s an easy excuse when things aren’t going right.

When the court case came out and was finalized I asked this very question. If each school is now required to pay players millions of dollars, where does that come from? Not every school is in the place Nebraska is and in fact, very few are. Schools will be forced to make decisions based on the available funds at the University. I don't pretend to know Maryland's financial situation but from all accounts, it isn't great.

Its like when we were all young and just getting by and all of a sudden a major expense came along we weren't' prepared for. Money is money, there isn't endless supply and some of these colleges struggle.

Both things could be true.

It's not a good look to offer that excuse when every other team is dealing with the same issues.
