Seems like an odd move. Figured a Group of 5 HC gig would make more sense.
I thought the same thing. Seems like a Midwest guy and seems weird to uproot the family for a somewhat unstable situation at USC, especially on defense.

Kleiman got the KSU HC job, and Bohl got the Wyoming HC job coming from NDSU, so I kind of expected Entz to get a HC position.

They’re still in their playoffs too. No doubt he’s getting a pay raise.
Ya that’s the odd part: the timing of this announcement unless someone leaked it and they couldn’t doing anything but confirm it. He was making over 400 at NDSU . But that’s in Fargo not a bad living expense .But the cost of living in LA how much is USC going to pony up to a guy with zero FBS experience. Odd move IMO.

Great timing for the Griz!

Cc: @MissoulaHusker
Very interesting! And hopefully the Griz laid their egg this last weekend. NDSU hasn’t been quite as dominant as they were in the past. I wonder if he was losing any fire being there but he obviously thought it was the right time to jump. Maybe joining Lincoln Riley will ultimately help him climb the ladder faster than making a Klieman-like (or lesser) move.

Asst. head coach/linebackers but not DC. Kind of strange but the Dakota schools can have some small town booster politics that don’t make much sense. NDSU boosters were unhappy with getting beat by both South Dakota schools in the regular season.

I’ve always herd in business, the first Generation develops it (Bohl), the second generation perfects it (Klieman), and the 3rd generation screws it up (Entz).

Entz had a couple great seasons that were teams he took over from Klieman. But the program has started to decline the last few season. Entz smart to escape why he can

Very odd move IMO and he isn't being named a coordinator is he? So how much salary we talkin bout here?

shoulda maybe Leverage USC interest with a small raise/extension?

if I was the AD at a middling P5 program, he'd be my first call.

i'd guess this is the start of a long career for him in the Big 10.

But cost of housing in a nice neighborhood in LA has to be about 10x more expensive than in North Dakota. And then there's the California taxes.
Yeah, I have no idea what a position coach with an Associate head coach title makes at USC. Kind of an odd move if you ask me. I feel like he could have had that job at a ton of schools.

He's not looking to retire there. It's a stepping stone job to a Power 5 HC gig.

Not many coaches step up directly from linebackers coach to Power 5 Head Coach. Seems odd to leave for less than a coordinator position. Plus he's already 51 years old.

I think that’s how he’s viewing it. With the emergence of South Dakota State and NIL stealing his best players life has gotten tougher for NDSU. They got very lucky with the QBs they’ve recruited and I’m not sure sustaining their level of play trying to recruit to Fargo is realistic.

Now or never. Who knows. He might have some connection to somebody on Riley’s staff. He’s been given the assistant head coach title so he’s probably getting a significant pay bump.

Another Griz fan in Great Falls heading to the game Saturday too. My son was in Bobby's Hauck's first recruiting class back in 2003. Go GRIZ!!!

since coach klieman left, ndsu has fallen from the national pinnacle. the bison have lost five straight to their rival south dakota state. thus entz may see the writing on the wall. expect he'll make more money, net, in l.a. than fargo anyway. i agree, a natural next step would have been to follow al bohl at wyoming had entz been more successful at ndsu.

another off the bison tree is northwestern's david braun who turned that program around after pat fitzgerald was terminated. braun should be b10 coy. he has done a truly remarkable job.

Braun is the HC at NW.

NDSU has fallen but not too far. Unless people thought they would hit on an NFL qb every 4 years and win the title every year. They won it in 2021, lost in the title game last year, and are in the semifinal this year. Now think about the fact that Trey Lance could have played all 3 of those years. How many FCS teams lose qb's to the NFL with 3 years of eligibility remaining?

As a USD fan, I was hoping the Yotes would at least make it to the final four. NDSU has been looking solid in the playoffs, knew it would be tough to beat them again. Now I’ll switch my attention to the Griz. Been a fan since my wife’s cousin played QB there in 2001 & 2002. Go Griz!!!

i actually wonder if Braun leaving is what caused NDSU to take a step back. dude looks remarkable at NW

They lost some games this year but Braun was only at NW for this year. And their step back wasn't much of a step back. The last 3 years - title, title game loss, semifinals this weekend.

yeah i know. heading into the playoffs last year, their only losses were 3 points to Arizona, and 2 points to SDSU. this year it was 3 losses with 2 of them being blowouts. they were also an XP away from a possible early exit to the playoff. maybe they finish running the table, will be interesting to see.

the fact that Braun so clearly improved NW has to speak for his ability as a coach.
