He had to be in his upper 30’s. I always looked forward to Low and Aschoff articles on ESPN.com in July.

I think he's been on Paul Finebaum's show a few times. You don't hear of someone his age dying from pneumonia very often.

He was 34 today. I cant believe it. Had two chances to meet him and everything being said on Twitter about him is absolutely true. What a good guy and a devastating loss.

Went to the hospital weeks ago and was on antibiotics. Just tragic. Cant imagine what his family is going through right now.

Once you have it for a little while untreated, you go septic. It’s hard to come back from that. Christmas won’t be the same again for his family.

That is terrible. It makes me wonder if they actually diagnosed the causative agents. There has been a co-infection that hit my immediate family and extended a few weeks ago. Symptoms presented as a flu-like virus (non-influenza), but also a bacterial infection developed. My kids and wife needs antibiotics to clear the bacteria after the virus cleared. Had a cousin develop bacterial pneumonia as well after the virus.

In all 3 cases, physicians missed the bacterial in the initial, each was told the virus would clear in 5-7 days and on the 2nd trip the bacterial sinus ear or lung infections showed.

Typically, it should be rather straightforward to diagnose a viral vs bacterial infections, but based on personal experience this season and unless Aschoff had complications from influenza induced pneumonia, these co-infections are nasty this go around.

Be careful with your health folks, particularly if a routine “flu” isn’t clearing up after 5 or so days.

Pneumonia is horrible. You have bacterial and viral. A lot of folks don't realize they have it for several days. I got bacterial at work about 14 years ago, we were busting out old concrete block walls and 3 folks got it. That was a week in hell. All you can do is get treatment and sleep. Doctor made me come back in for two follow ups over the month after getting it.

If your busting up old concrete walls, wear a mask or rebreather.

Wow. He must of had it for a long time and didn’t get it checked out till it was too late. Terrible.

Looked like he was really active on Twitter but last posted on 12-7 so it would seem things may have started around that time. Sad news!

Yeah, I thought only kids, elderly, and the already sick died of it

There's always that small percentage that get a freaky complication (like encephalitis) or get septic. Like with the flu.

Fungal pneumonia is also a rare but deadly pneumonia. You usually die if you get a fungal pneumonia. Nasty stuff you don't want to come across.

There was a second grader here in Tupelo that died from it this weekend. He’d just been in their Christmas program, and he’d won a bike Thursday for perfect attendance this month... absolutely heartbreaking.

I had legionnaires' disease when I was 14. Went to the doctor and got diagnosed with bronchitis, that night I told my mom I felt like I was going to die and ended up spending a week in the hospital. They told her another 24 hours without treatment and I would have died.

My brother came very close to dying from pneumonia at 36. Was misdiagnosed for the first few days he was in he hospital even though he kept telling them he could not breath. Finally my mom and I threw a fit because he was turning a very pail green color and they ran a few more tests. Never completely trust what a doctor tells you if you can’t make sense of it and always if possible have someone with you to be your advocate. Went from, he is fine, just need to keep a few days to icu and three/ four days of may not make it though the night..
can’t prove it but personally believe he did not get the best care because he was between jobs and did not have insurance as well. Had a totally different feeling to it from being in the hospital with insurance...
