It's possible but unlikely that when they play in chapel heel for the first game this year that Duke could be undefeated and unc with only one loss. This was probably mean that Duke comes in at #1 and unc at #2. It's a lot of more games to play before we meet but it is a possibility. I'm sure it's happened before . Does anyone know if they've been ranked #1 and #2 before. It's a Thursday night 8 o'clock game and I can still hit my scheduled bedtime. Can you guys just imagine the hype. Personally I hope it doesn't happen because I want to see unc with several losses by that time but with big luke "bird" maye putting up 30 and 15 and with joel "cool breeze" berry cruisin' up and down the court it might happen. What if Mich State is still one loss and looking strong and we drop a game to Clemson? Would we stay at number 1? When is the last time that happened?

UNC will have 9 or 10 losses by then. I expect Duke to smash unc and Luke “Bird” Maye.

I just think winning a game that isn't a gimme is more fun than beating a sub .500 team that we know we are going to destroy going in. And, I think it hurts them more when they think they have a chance to win and don't, vs knowing going in that they are going to get killed....To each, his own.
No way UNC is ranked #2 at that point in the season. Even if they win out between now and then which won’t happen given away games at Tennessee, Notre Dame, and Clemsom, , teams like Nova, Florida, Wichita St, Cincy, Kansas and Michigan St would all have to lose at least one game and possibly two. Think Nova and Kansas can lose two games and remain ranked above UNC. There is also the eye test and just don’t see voters ranking UNC that high that early with the team they have.
I can’t find anything about whether or not Duke and UNC have played each other while ranked #1 and #2 but I did find a link with the 10 best games all-time between Duke and UNC and in February 1998 Duke and UNC played with Duke ranked #1 and UNC ranked #3
We may not be undefeated when we play, but don't be surprised if we are. This is a special team, getting better as we go. If one believes in karma, everything that has went wrong for Duke the last 2 seasons, isn't it about time for the opposite to happen?
Cal is trying to bring his freshman along slowly. No sense playing Mich St, Florida and at Indiana this early.

Personally i always hope we mop the floor with the cheaters, and I pull against them with deep passion whenever they play. With their track record of playing the system and beating it for over 20 years their brand is nothing more than a tarnished one.

Yes but the cheaters still won the big dance and no matter how much we try to forget it they keep bragging about it. Drives me crazy as its like living a nightmare.

Carolina will have 4-5 losses by then and Duke will be scary good. I've never been worried before about Duke bigs, but Cook and Bagley are amazingly talented and only getting better.
UNC typically plays more sloppy games than Duke during the fall / winter period. They will likely have more losses.
That said, UNC is still a very competitive, top 10 calibre team this year - with a veteran team and, as usual, there will be two hotly contested games. very possibly three.

Luke has to be his teams leading scorer. Bagley doesn't.
Yep. And both Maye and Berry have to play well to beat Duke. An off game by either and I doubt they can beat us. We definitely have more room for error.

Don't be fooled by the numbers, Big Luke is putting up good numbers against mid-major type schools. Come conference play, those numbers will deflate. I watched the MSU-UNC game and Luke was terrible and was obviously not on the same level with MSU athletic bigs. Keep in mind our frontcourt out rebounded MSU without Bagley and was able to score in the post. UNC's interior is atrocious and Luke Maye can't stay in front of anyone who's halfway athletic. I will keep this simple, our frontcourt will destroy Luke Maye and unc's frontcourt this season.
I would agree. Ironically, for UNC to beat us, they're going to have to shoot really well from the outside. If they don't, I'm not sure they can match us basket for basket. That's a bit of reversal from some past seasons, when it was Duke that needed the outside shot to be our equalizer.
Unc has played 1 ncaa tournament team this year. Arkansas is a bubble team at best (doubt they make it). Msu destroyed unc. I bet tennessee gives them a fight at tennessee. Thats why roy scheduled cupcakes. Unc has played nothing but football schools this year expect msu
Their non-conference slate this year is pretty weak. But those things happen. A lot of these games/tournaments are scheduled far in advance, so there's no way in knowing how 'good' a team might be when they meet. We've had years like that, too. It doesn't really matter, either....because ultimately we both play in the ACC and know we're going to be tested most nights.
To be honest, some years these things work out for the better. Like this year for us....playing a tough early schedule was pretty important to this team. It's allowed them to grow and I think they're way ahead of any other recent Duke team at this time. For UNC, losing their entire front line and the ACC POY, a 'weaker' schedule just benefits them more.
I would surprised if they can even stay within single digits. I don't see any scenario where we don't murder them in the paint and on the boards
I like that, even though our ACC slate this year looks to be quite a bit easier than last season's, we play some of our tougher games leading up to the first UNC matchup. I'd be a bit concerned if we had fought through this first tough stretch only to have it pretty easy until UNC. That's not the case. We'll be tested again before we see them. I like our chances.
