That was the biggest surprise of the game for me.
They opened up some pretty big holes on the line of scrimmage. Iowa lacks the LB talent this season to make up for that.
Yes, they allowed themselves to get held on multiple occasions, and they're not athletic or smart enough to make up for that.
It was the main difference in the game. Iowa was lucky to be in it, imo.

Hard to win a game when someone gets 7+ YPC. Stellar OLine and RB on Oregon. Our DLine just couldn't handle it.
Iowa needs an explosive rb, Moulton is ok but lacks big play ability, and for the love of god run the ball maybe once on 2pt conversions

In the end they hold a high powered offense to one touchdown. I am not a football genius, but is it possible that in our bend but don’t break philosophy the Hawks went into the game thinking stop the pass first, and make them beat us running the ball? We held their passing down well, and in the end kept them out of endzone except for one time. I prefer to think the gameplan worked pretty well. If you had told me we hold them to 18 points before the game, I would take the Hawks chances every time.
I was surprised Iowa never broke off a long running play. I figured they would eventually get one.

No one was going to be passing much in the rain. Gameplan should have been to stop the run. Giving up 260 on the ground when everyone knew it was coming is not good.
I’m sure the game plan was clearly to stop the run. There’s a reason we couldn’t. They have a great o line along with really good backs. Best running team in the league and it’s not close.
I felt like there was enough push and enough holes to get more than we did. This was definitely a game that had me pining for KJ.

Agree. We need some big physical LB to fill those gaps. We don’t have that guy this year
Phil’s blitzing a ton this year because our LB’s are not good. Give them simple assignments that can create high-variance plays, as opposed to giving them the full assignment that normally comes with the position. This isn’t simply being spoiled by Higgins, Jackson, and on down the line. These guys are 2014 level bad. But those guys at least had the excuse of being young.
Well these guys have basically never played until this season so it’s the same thing. We’ve been spoiled by so many good and some great linebacker play. Caught up to us a bit this year.
I would be fine with starting the young guys at LBer against MSU and Neb. That’s the obvious place where there’s a talent gap and I don’t think they can be worse than what’s on the field currently. 43 is fast but soft and needed to be told where to go by Montgomery all game
I think equal blame can go to the DL and LB’s.

Certainly since those awful D efforts vs UCLA and Sparty last year. Hard to believe on awful day like that an opposing team could just run over the Dline over and over for 8-12 yds a pop.
