Dave Burke was a damn good running back out of high school. From Utah if I recall. And also without Googling, didn't those two switch jerseys in a bowl game? And then it made zero difference?Mike McCashland and Dave Burke.
Pretty sure I was a hospital roommate of McCashland's when I had my first knee cartilage removal surgery.Mike McCashland and Dave Burke.
Yes, in the orange bowl against Miami after the 83 season. Bernie Kosar was able to read our simplistic coverages so those two geniuses decided to switch jerseys to try and confuse him. The problem was it only fooled him for a play or two since one of our guys (Burke I think) had a big $ss mustache you could easily see.Dave Burke was a damn good running back out of high school. Yeah I loved those guys back in the day....but looking back now, if we had better athletes in the secondary, that 1983 team would have won another national championship easy. Hindsight is always 20/20 tho...Yes, in the orange bowl against Miami after the 83 season. We still had a 1970's mentality with the program back then. Recruit plenty of RBs because you could convert some of them to corner. Then finally sometime around 1980-82 we recruited our first top prospect dedicated to playing corner. I think Brian Washington was the first real highly touted DB that we brought in from what I remember anyway.Yeah I loved those guys back in the day....but looking back now, if we had better athletes in the secondary, that 1983 team would have won another national championship easy. True but we still almost won that game. I'll mention that in our only loss in '82 to Penn State and the '83 loss to Miami, we had not a single sack.Yeah I loved those guys back in the day....but looking back now, if we had better athletes in the secondary, that 1983 team would have won another national championship easy. There's not a single player off that Penn State team that thinks that either of those final catches were legit. And then of course everything fell just right for Miami to knock us off. Starting with Mike Rozier getting hurt.True but we still almost won that game. I'll mention that in our only loss in '82 to Penn State and the '83 loss to Miami, we had not a single sack.
I see the first one often on YouTube. The TE was out. For clarity, the Miami game was in '84 after the '83 season. There's not a single player off that Penn State team that thinks that either of those final catches were legit. It was a ballsy call by Osborne to run it. Rozier was the Heisman Winner, but Jeff Smith was a damn good RB in his own right. He was one of the top three RB recruits in the nation coming out of high school. Man, those were the days. When we got up three TDs and people got excited with the opportunity to see our backup RBs in action.I see the first one often on YouTube. The TE was out. What an option play to Jeff Smith for the 22 yard TD! I believe that was a fourth down. ???
