Did Big 12 schedule-makers get it wrong?

Oklahoma State at West Virginia Oct. 28

Oklahoma at Oklahoma State Nov. 4.

West Virginia at Oklahoma Nov. 25.

Oklahoma State may be looking ahead to the Bedlam game with Oklahoma the next week. Maybe WVU can surprise O State.

WVU plays Oklahoma Nov. 25. If the Mountaineers win and the two teams are ranked #1 and #2, then they would play again the next week in the conference title game. Obviously the schedule-makers put them opposite each other at the end because they didn’t think WVU would be #1 or #2 and in the conference title game. Maybe the Mountaineers can surprise the schedule-makers.

The conference has a random method of scheduling to ensure different matchups occur at different times of the year. It has nothing to do with who they think will be at the top or bottom of the conference.

From a conference standpoint this works out well if you believe that OU and OK St are the two best teams this year. You wouldn't want the same teams playing in the final game and then again in the Championship.

Absolutely wrong this season. With the conference title game for the first time the Big 12 ... and, more importantly, TV ... does NOT want the same 2 teams to play each other twice in 8 days. So the schedule was set up to keep Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, the mostly likely title game contestants, from playing each other twice in as long as 4 weeks. Look at the schedule. The teams projected to finish highest play earlier. The ones figured to finish lower play later. Your premise is way off base. Next year it will be the same thing. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State will not play in the final week of the regular season, as the Sooners and Mountaineers do this year. It's bad for TV ratings. And it changes what you do in the regular season game if you know, win or lose, you play again the following week for all the marbles. TV rules. They aren't going to do anything to hurt their ratings. And conferences do TV's bidding because they're paying millions for the coverage. Respectfully, I disagree. If it doesn't make sense, I don't believe it.

The conference schedule is done so the team play each other at different times of the year from year to year. We played Baylor our first conference game our first year in the conference. We played them the last game of the year last year.

Ask the AD.

It has NOTHING to do with who the conference thinks will be good or bad.

With how our defense is getting shredded by Kansas right now, I don't think we have anything to worry about. [winking]

If you want to believe that TV had NO role in how the Big 12 conference schedule is set up, then Pollyanna is your friend.

As a 43-year editor/reporter, skepticism is my strong suit.

Seriously, if you are a reporter, pick up the phone and call the AD and get it right. Educate yourself (and us).

But not fact-checking or objectivity.
Am I a homer for WVU? I plead guilty. Happily. You REALLY think that TV has NO role in determining the Big 12 schedule? Hah! I have a bridge in Brooklyn and swampland in Florida (there's some left) that I'd like to sell you.

TV determines matchups, kickoff times, kickoff days all over the country, and you think the Big 12 is immune to that? That's a white-cane mentality.
