Won us both games. Hope this tournament made a believer of any remaining doubters.
Defensively there is no doubt this team can get after it and make life absolutely miserable for the opposition.
But still a loooong ways to go offensively, at least in terms of actually putting the ball through the hoop.
If offense can get more consistent though, watch out B1G.
Big is loaded at the top....Purdue, Michigan, Michigan State, Illinois. But I like our chances against most everyone else
I really look forward to Ben going up against Izzo in East Lansing in 6 days (Tues, Dec 2).
MSU (6-0) already has 2 impressive wins on their resume (Arkansas & Kentucky)

Hawks have a H&H vs Purdue, home against Michigan and Illinois & have to go to MSU.
Schedule-wise, Iowa can't ask for much better opportunities against that foursome.

Minus BTT I’ll take this game with a little grain of salt because it would be only time play back to back. Assume conf tourney wouldn’t go 8 deep in 2nd game but think that showed at times tonight in 2nd half. But kudos for winning game when your shots aren’t falling and super star has an off night. Shocked Hausen didn’t play not as shocked jirak didn’t.
I believe Ben said that his normal rotation would be around 7.

I was so happy watching tonight's game. There is actual EFFORT being expended on defense. It was like watching the Dr Tom days minus the full court press. Fran's teams lacked instruction, agility, conditioning, and desire. Guys are now switching quickly and correctly on screens, they're fouling to stop easy layups, they're contesting better, they're rebounding better. We are a skinny team, but a very agile, skilled, and well coached team.
This is what Fran never understood….the importance of defense. Fran was all offense, all the time…which is fine if the shots are falling. But if they are not, or the other team is hot, then they were screwed. Defense can win you games even when the offense is off.

As we've seen for too long, you can't win in the post-season if you can't play defense.
I mentioned it in the game thread but it’s strangely odd to have confidence in an Iowa basketball team to not give up 80 points a game.

It is so refreshing to watch. That and not having to watch us play a matchup zone where we are slow as molasses rotating and see wide open 3 after 3 jacked up against us.
I think this is the biggest reason for Fran's lack of success in the tourney. Case in point, the Richmond ******* Spiders. That game still makes me mad.
Banks HAS to be better than he's shown the last two games. He's gotta finish at the rim and avoid silly mistakes.
We are looking a lot more like Wisconsin with better offense. Our games against them will be a real barometer for our overall conference standings going forward.
The Richmond debacle was the beginning of the end of Fran at Iowa.

Banks - like his teammates - is really good at the D end, but he's 'you never know what you're gonna get' and 'hope for the best' when Iowa has the ball. At least so far in the first 7 games.

The Tavion good way outweighs the bad. He’s still pretty raw, probably never going to be much of a jump shooter but he does everything McCollum wants him to do. Screens hard, and can also guard almost any position out there. He’s the ultimate team player.
It’s been a long time since we have had a really good basketball coach….Lickliter was horrible, we basically paid Alford to learn on the job, and obviously Fran never believed in Defense, conditioning, or the weight room. 🫤
Really like the in your face with overplay. Lots of hands in passing lanes one pass away and help and recover after that. Been a long time since we have seen that.
This will be a litmus test right off the bat, to see if the Hawks will truly compete for a Top4 seed in the BTT this season.
Yeah. The home opener could be brutal to be honest, because you know everyone there will be hyper-stoked. Walking into the hornet's nest. I'll be looking at our poise and ability to hit back.
The efficiency numbers (adjusted for pace) were top 20... Until the calendar turned to February. Its been horrific since. I have no idea what happened.
