Crown Tournament - NIT Discussion

As bad as the season has gone, I'd like to see the season continue with the Crown Tournament or possibly the NIT.

Let's assume the following teams are invited to the NIT:
Ohio State 17-15
Indiana 19-13
Nebraska 17-14

That means the top 2 remaining teams get selected for the Crown:
Northwestern 17-16
Iowa 17-16

That leaves these teams available for at-large Crown births:
Penn State 16-15
USC 16-17
Minnesota 15-17
Rutgers 15-17

While unfair to PSU who has a winning record, I would think RU would get the nod over the rest of the group because of Ace and Dylan.

A weird quirk with the Crown is the first game is a week AFTER the transfer portal opens. What do you do if half of your roster is in the portal? This could help RUs cause since you would still be able to field a team with Ace, Dylan, Acuff, Hayes, Martini and anyone else that doesn't enter the portal.

I have little doubt that we'd see a mail-in effort if Rutgers somehow ended up in Las Vegas at the end of the month. That tournament is going to be some uninspired basketball.
People have been saying this about the next game for months, and while results have still not been good due to the inherent flaws with the team the effort has been there.

They will either decline the invite or they will play hard.

The Rutgers season should be over.Concentration should be on roster formation for next season along with changes in the coaching staff.Prolonging a season disaster makes no sense .Time to clean house with a new University President, athletic director and new coaching staffs for most of the Rutgers teams.

Northwestern made a statement yesterday that they will decline any post season invitations due to injuries on the team.
F that, they were healthy enough to play in Indy.

I'll be pissed if we get picked for the Crown. NIT I assume we'd decline.

This season needs to be done.

FWIW, a guy who does NIT bracketology has every single Big Ten team in either the NCAA tournament, the NIT, or the Crown.

Even Washington. (actually I don't see Northwestern, but maybe he's factoring in them already saying they're not doing any of this)

He has us in the NIT.

Whole thing is a joke.

Just End The Season. Nothing to be gained to play in anything but March Madness, especially when Ace and Dylan opt out. Unless you want to give some exposure to student manager putting on Rutgers jerseys. Focus should be 110% on transfer portal and nothing else since we have no GM and Pike botched it for the most important season in our basketball history.

6 of the 16 teams will be "autobids" out of the big east, big 10, and big 12.

The other 10 are at large but I think the idea is they want it mostly P5 schools.

Worst tournament I could possibly imagine.

Yup. Effort has been there. Defense, conditioning and offensive alternatives to Ace and Dylan haven’t.

We were uninspired at Home vs Hofstra. What would it be like 2-3 weeks after the season in front of a completely empty building with the game meaning absolutely nothing. Ridiculed if you lose and laughed at if you win the tournament

This crown tournament is an absolute joke and it sucks everything out of the NIT. Who would actually attend any of these games?
no one...just like the vegas tourney was sparsely attended and they lost money

they are counting on eyeballs alone...content

Honestly I don't think I'd even watch in hopes that no one else does either and this thing gets axed going forward.

If they get invited to the Crown tournament they have to go. You can't tell the guy paying the bills (Fox) screw you. It's mandatory.
.
I agree but do they give us a conditional offer — if Dylan and/or Ace play? Maybe not if the other options include Seton Hall, who had a historical bad season.

I'm well aware that rule is in place but I'm waiting for someone to explain how Northwestern was able to tell them to kick rocks.

I thought the Crown Tourney rules state they would invite the top 2 teams from each of the Big 10, Big 12 and Big East who did NOT make the NCAA tournament - BEFORE the NIT gets to pick ... and by conference rules, I believe teams must accept the Crown OVER the NIT.

FYI, the NIT has changed its invitation rules (from a n article I saw. The NIT will now offer automatic picks to the top 2 teams from the ACC and SEC who missed the NCAA tournament, plus 12 other invites - the TOP 12 TEAMS NOT IN THE NCAA from the top 12 conferences. And those top 16 teams will be promised a home game in the initial round of the NIT. The Top 12 conferences will be ranked using Ken Pomeroy's rankings. But the top 12 teams will be selected using an unknown mix of several computer calculations (Pomeroy, Bart Torvik, BPI, KTI, NET, strength of schedule, and "wins above bubble." Could RU actually rank in the top 12 of teams in the top 12 conferences who are NOT invited to the NCAA, and are not the top 2 in each of the non-NCAA teams from the ACC and the SEC?

You can tell when players are trying, particularly on defense
This past game we turned it on in the second half with a gritty effort

We should have won

I was thinking if the dude on Michigan doesn't hit that long 3, and if JWill would have made his free throws at the end of regulation or hit that open 3 in the first OT against USC, our NET would likely be in the mid 60s and we'd be a lock for the NIT. And if my aunt had balls...

But now you're saying the Crown actually picks AHEAD of the NIT? Interesting. So now I'm not sure where RU is more likely to end up, if anywhere. I guess if I had my druthers, I'd rather be in the NIT. At least it starts before the transfer portal opens.

As much as losing to USC hurt the other night - yeah, if we are in either tournament, I'm all in. (To watch on TV, not to travel to the games.) I'm a lifelong Rutgers guy, win or lose. I literally bleed scarlet, or at least some similar shade of red.
