"We are six months through a new program and I'm not sure our attrition is complete just yet," said Coach Mullen in regards to knowing how many roster spots will be open this fall. "I hope it is because I'm pleased with the guys we have here, but it is usually a full year cycle before you find out who is in and who is out with a new program. <p class="MsoNormal">"There have not been many guys so far and that kind of shocks me because the off season workouts are no picnic over there, that's no day in the park. That just shows the desire our kids have to want to win."</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
</p> <p class="MsoNormal">Doesn't surprise me. If there's anything Croom's team did well it was not quit - in games not called Egg Bowl 2008.

Ole Miss had (and has) a very good team that got better towards the end of the season. Our team had given up on the coach and had no will to play.

Now I expected a whoopin, but not an embarrassment of titanic proportions.

Time will tell on that on Brian, although it certainly couldn't get any worse. I really think Mullen's got your team headed in the right direction though. Bowl game this year.

I definitely think Croom left Mullen a decent base to start from. Although we may not want to give Croom credit, Mullen doesn't have to root out guys and then try to rebuild.

I never said Croom left him talent.

Croom inherited some talented headcases. Mullen doesn't have the talent, but he doesn't seem to have as many headcases either. Winning starts in the mind. It's an attitude. I think Mullen can build a winning team quicker since he doesn't have to root out the ones who don't want to win in the classroom, on the football field and in life. Sure, he's going to have to recruit some talent to get there. But, I think he has a solid base to build from.

Where the hell was all this character when this was happening ? Did Croom recruit character kids who`s character will show up better under Mullen now that Croom`s gone ? I think we`re in for some tough times until we can get some talent on campus.

but I'd rather start the day with Norwood, Dockery, Stewart, Culberson, Evans, Deljuan, and Powell than the group we currently have. See, for every headcase Croom ran off, there's a guy currently on a NFL roster.

Mullen inherited a bunch of guys who will try hard because they know they are currently at the only SEC school they could hope to play at. It's easy to get effort from guys who realize it's this or nothing.

I was implying it got rid of Croom. Which is what 95% of wanted to happen. I'm not sure he'd have gotten the axe had we played a close game and loss. I may be wrong, but I think Croom would still be here had that game not turned out like it did.

You always want as much talent as possible.

My point is that Croom had to run off as much talent as he kept. Guys like Nick Turner and Darren Williams. Guys unwilling to do simple **** that it takes to win in life like go to class.

Vince Lombardi, in his famous speech What It Takes To Be Number One, said <font size="2" face="arial">"<span style="font-style: italic;">Winning is not a sometimes thing; it's an all the time thing. You don't win once in a while; you don't do things right once in a while; you do them right all the time. Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.</span></font>" Winning starts with doing the little things right. Croom knew that. Mullen knows that. Every good coach knows that.

Yes, talent is extremely important. But, at least Mullen is able to start with a team that pretty much has the right mindset - talented or not. That's the base success is built from. And I think Mullen can go ahead and build the house on the attitudinal foundation that Croom left. That's all I'm saying.

as much as it will be because he wasn`t given a lifetime contract to 17 around in Starkville, get fat (fatter) and be the SEC`s proof of it`s newfound political correctness. He was hired to win in a reasonable time frame or be gone. This time there will at least be an urgency to win ASAP. He may not get it done but I`ll assure you everyone knows the deal.

Some he had to, no doubt. But he ran off a few extra to make a point. I think he overdid it because he thought he had a 6-7 year contract and it didnt matter. Wasnt Nick Turner run off for being a minute or two late for the first meeting? Nick was no boy scout and probably wouldnt have made it, but **** like that was done because Crooms didnt give a **** about winning the first couple of years. I'm betting this wasnt done is year 3 or 4.

No. Nick Turner was run off for telling a coach to go 17 himself when the coach told him to do his strength and conditioning work. And then he completely blew off the meeting with Crxxm. He wasn't a minute or two late. He never showed. I won't argue that Sherrill left Crxxm with several really talented players, but I honestly can't think of more than 1 or 2 that Crxxm ran off that had any damn business being on a college football team. In fact, the only one that comes to mind immediately is Calvin Wilson, who was a Crxxm recruit. There's plenty of legitimate stuff to criticize Crxxm for, but the one thing he did get right was to take control of the asylum back from the inmates.

reading in the C-L Turner stating he was a couple of minutes late for a meeting and then he was told to leave. Something bout the door being locked and Crooms stating 1:30 means be here by 1:20 or some ****...

I'm not saying Crooms didnt need to tighten the program down, but I think he overdid it. Just my opinion.

and according to brad locke, he left the usm team
From the Hattiesburg American: Wilson leaves USM football team.

I used to mentor a high school boy's group in Hattiesburg and he used to come around sometimes. I always thought he was soft and had no heart. Just a big kid. I guess that's okay. You don't have to be a football player just because you're big. If your heart is not in it ....

Sad to see potential NFL talent go to waste though.

I think his execution was lacking, though. Unfortunately for him, it would have benefitted him greatly to have been in the college game for at least a year or two, or hire a staff of guys like UT (can't believe I just typed that) and hired some guys that were really good recruiters to bring in talent. And it's not just recruiting- stuff like the conditioning, yeah some of it probably was laziness, but some of it was also from lack of knowledge on how intense the workouts need to be. It also would have been nice if he realized that Ole Miss was our rival and not Alabama. But, anyway, hire your friends after you've had some success and established your program.

And as far as talent, one thing I haven't seen anyone mention is the guys that he did bring in with some talent that should be in the NFL that weren't developed. Yeah, he had some guys that had no business in the SEC like Henig, but he also had some guys with some ability like Tony Burks, Derek Pegues, Anthony Strauder, Jessie Bowman, and heck even Titus Brown that should have been drafted but weren't mainly because they were under-developed.

But all that aside, I think Croom would have been fine if he wasn't such a horrible coach on gameday. His decisions were asinine. And really, how in the hell do you lose to Maine? Tulane? and OK, Houston? If you win your three gimme non-conference games, you're halfway to a bowl. Then you upset someone, beat UK Vandy or South Carolina, and beat UM, you're in a bowl. There's no reason why we can't win at least six a year if he had just made the decisions that made sense.

Now as far as what he left, I don't know. I think there is some talent here and there. At the same time, I think we're going to play a ton of Fr. I do think that the players that are left will probably have success under Mullen and are better off now than they were at this time last year. And we still have a few guys that probably don't belong in the SEC. I mean, we're seriously looking at playing a true Fr. at QB for at last part of the season. That's pretty scary to me. The jury is still out on our o-line. We have some athletes at the skill positions, many of them are Fr. to, though. I think our front seven will be pretty good, but our secondary is worriesome. We have some new guys on the ST unit, thank God, but they also have no SEC experience as of now, but probably will be an improvement nonetheless.

But I still think we can win six.
