Yeah I know it’s a Nebraska board and Crayton sucks etc

Even so, KBB recently retired after a long successful career

Also, Ed Servais is hanging it up at the end of this season

I even read that they recently hired a ‘coach in waiting’ for the basketball team. Is McDermott looking to move on soon?

That seems like a lot of changes in their major sports. Is everything okay in the AD office or is this just no big shakes?

Sooner or Later it was bound to happen I suppose (you know I had to😛)

I thought this would be Greg's last season there. It was just a hunch I had many months ago. Looks like I was wrong.

Good questions though. That's a lot of stuff to hapoen in such a short time frame.

You forgot the biggest change of all - Ryan Kalkbrenner wrapping up a solid, 9-year career at Creighton. :)

From what I read, it sounds like McDermott is going to coach one or two more seasons, then retire. Nothing against the guy they chose as coach-in-waiting, but I don't think it's a good move. Creighton basketball is in an envious situation, being the biggest deal in a growing city and having almost every game on national TV (and none of that ESPN+ crap). It's hard to know what kind of candidates that job would attract until you open it up, so why just hand it to Huss? Feels like a TO-hand-picking-Solich kind of move.

I would say that it is no big shakes. If anything I think it kind of show a lot of stability within the athletics department to have your major sport coaches retire or resign as opposed to having to fire them.

Servais announced in May of 2024 that he we retiring after 2025. so that was a known situation and Creighton hired the former South Carolina head coach Kingston to be coach in waiting last June. Kind of looks like the same deal with Mac, but he may still have a little tread left on the tires. Nothing formal, but I am sure the retirement thought has crossed his mind he has been a head coach for over 30 years now. I am not in the know, but I would have to guess that the VB coach retiring was a little bit of a surprise, but I guess she had been there over 20 years so I think she is entitled to step away.

I know there has been some turnover with softball and women's soccer in the last couple of years, but their flag ship sports of basketball, baseball, volleyball and men's soccer have been pretty rock solid in their lack of turnover for the last 20 - 30 years. Which Nebraska could say that.

According to a big donor/alum, there is a lot of blame being assigned to the AD's office by some of the boosters, especially in the case of KBB.

I saw she took some administrative job with a pro volleyball league. Sounds boring. Maybe she'll resurface when a higher profile job opens.

Just like the T.O./Solich situation I don't think either veteran coach wanted to leave it up to their current AD to make the next hire. I always thought the most important part of an AD's job description was to make the next important hire. Are Creighton fans happy with their current AD?

Possibly. The current AD has only been there 3-4 yrs. Maybe Mac and Service didn’t feel confident enough in his abilities working with him.

I get a little inside info...the new AD has pissed off some people. Not like in a super bad way but just he is the "new" guy and isn't the "old guy"

Gregg will do one more season...former players are not thrilled with Huss being named coach-in-waiting, but it probably doesn't really matter what they think.

Yeah, they did not get along all that well. Or at least did not get along like they did with the old AD, which is probably normal.

Huss seems like a good coach, he turned High Point around right away. With DeVries at Indiana and Lutz at Okie St now, neither of them are coming back, so they locked Huss up before he gets a major conference job.

Except Huss went out first and proved himself as up and coming head coach, and is known as a recruiter.

Yeah I have nothing against Huss. I just think Creighton has become an attractive enough gig that they would have been better off casting a wider net when looking for a replacement. Was Huss really going to score a better job than Creighton in the next year or two, and be beyond the Jays’ reach? I doubt it.

Huss was rumored to be a top candidate for the A&M job this offseason, and the Aggies ended up settling for McMillan who doesn't really have a better resumé than he does. So I'd say if he would have made the tournament again at High Point next year, he probably would be considered for several good major-conference jobs. But if he didn't then his stock would fall, so I think he was smart to take the coach-in-waiting job at Creighton.

It's hard to know what caliber of coach Creighton could have hired...last time they hired a coach they were still in the MVC, and McDermott was on the brink of getting fired at Iowa State after 4 straight losing seasons. But they appear to have an absolute ton of NIL money so I guess it would be an attractive job.

I get what you are saying about the women's soccer team and softball making changes, but softball has had 3 coaches in their history dating back to the late 70's, early 80's and the women's soccer team has had 6 coaches since 1989, and three since 1999. It isn't like there hasn't been stability. But Blossom didn't like the male softball coach and the record was stagnant so he wasn't renewed, and the soccer coach wasn't winning at the same pace that his predecessors and was let go.

They had been pretty bad in softball the last couple years.
Years ago, and it should still be the same, this is where you got a HC job and you could stay for 30 years, no matter how you did, because literally no one cared at all.

I agree that it's a bit of a Solich move. But from my point of view, that is a good thing. Both situations had successful programs with strong fan support, but there's a specific formula to their success. Creighton recognizes this. Other schools in the Big East are similar- Butler, DePaul, Marquette, Xavier. Midwest schools, big cities, recent success (except DePaul). Not to mention the east coast schools.

It's also a unique advantage to have a head coach tell you he's done in a couple years and also have a top assistant winning almost 80% of his games somewhere. Huss knows what works at Creighton. Great move.
