without hiring an agent. Same thing he did last year. Will probably be back as his game needs fine tuning is a few areas. But why not declare and get free feedback?

Just dumb lol. Everyone knows his blaring issues. Jumper, left hand, 3 point shooting and IQ. No shot anyone shows any interest in him as a pro. Hes got a lot to improve on.

I do look forward to his progress but we will get the same instagram/announcement next year as well.

it's important to support Corey. He's a loyal son that easily could have left the program when Eddie got fired and played somewhere else. I agree that there are holes in his game but we should celebrate and support his goals.

It's Never "dumb" to chase your dreams while leaving the door to come back open. Especially after consulting family and coaches and being gracious to the fans.

Hes a great player. My favorite on the team aside from Williams. I love watching him play. He is not anywhere near pro ready.

Good luck to him either way, i hope the scouts give him some good insight on what to improve to up our wins next year.

That's probably the main reason for declaring, Corey might not be allowed to get some of the feedback he wants from NBA or overseas sources if he didn't declare.

A college player filing for the NBA draft two straight seasons is telling everybody that he wants to be paid as a basketball player. While most fans don't believe Sanders is NBA ready right now,he obviously has a different opinion.I'm sure Sanders knows his strengths and weaknesses as a basketball player better than anyone on a message board. There also might be family issues that could impact his ultimate decision. As a Rutgers fan I hope he returns because the program would face tremendous difficulty making up for his scoring next season.

Way to demean a kid who played his heart out for us. He's an excellent ball player who has to work on some facets of his game, as most every player does.

Tons to work on. If they provide feedback on things that can make him more look better to potential suitors, this isn't a bad thing. He doesn't need to really enter the draft though for that to happen. It's pretty obvious.

Get him with a real point guard and I think he will be better able to work on those things. He is a talented kid but that isn't being reached enough to play in the NBA right now.

3 point shooting and opposite hand finishes should be worked on daily.

I wonder if there is a stigma with entering and exiting the draft continuously though. I can see once, but this seems unusual.

some real douches in this thread. If any of you understood the process you'd realize that you're legitimately a moron to not declare every year under the new rule if you had nba aspirations. Does he have some areas he needs to improve? Sure. And I think he has even told people that himself.

But this kid is as loyal to RU as it gets and he plays his heart out for us. He's our best player and he loves being here. When all is said and done I think he's a 4 year player and will get a shot at the nba. Not saying he will even get drafted but his raw athleticism is off the charts.

Nothing wrong with being evaluated, and have the NBA scouts remind him what he needs to improve on to enhance his NBA status ... he can then compare that to what they said last year.

In my opinion, he must do 3 things, all of which CAN be done:

1) Shoot better from 3-point range ... I have several friends who coach individuals (high school players with talent) in skills. They all say that you CAN improve your shooting with practice. To the tune of 500 3-point shots a day for 2-3 months ... and then continue through the year at a lower rate to maintain.

2) Shoot better form the FT line. It is very bad for a guard to shoot just 62% from the FT line. Again, 500 FT's per day for several months, plus maintenance shooting.

3) Ball handling skill improvement, especially getting to his left. There are many drills that can be used to continue his development in this area.

Unfortunately, you cannot practice judgement ... he needs at least another year in college to demonstrate an improved judgment for both shot selection and stopping those lazy passes that led to too many turnovers.

One of Sanders' problems is that though he absolutely has NBA athleticism, he is just 6'2" ... which means he cannot really be a NBA 2G. He could be a NBA 3G (i.e. off the bench), or an NBA PG at that height ... but he still needs to improve his outside and FT shooting, and his left hand.

I have a friend who has coached several very high level high school players who have gotten Div 1 scholarships, and has some connections to the NBA. He says there are 3 skills that absolutely translate to the NBA from college, that NBA scouts feel comfortable advising their teams that players with those 3 skills WILL be able o transfer to the NBA:

a) Rebounding

b) Elite defense

c) Great passing.

Unfortunately, Sanders does not demonstrate ANY of these 3 skills consistently just yet. His defense is improving - I think it improved a LOT in the 2nd half of the season. His passing can be spectacular, but also very sloppy, and he gets caught in places where the passes are difficult. Rebounding? Not so much prized in a guard going to the NBA (sorry, Mike Williams).

But I think Sanders can enhance his defense and his passing with at least 1 more year in college.

One more item: I actually believe Sanders should be, and will be, back for next season. But we RU fans have to assume that is the best case, that he will not be a 4-year player for RU.

Agree with kYk, and Knight said he is the best athlete at guard he has coached.

Why so harsh, Fig?

He is a sophomore. You speak about him like he is a senior, and cannot improve.

He is a 20 year old kid. Sheesh..

Hey, if hearing the same exact thing everyone here has been saying from NBA types is what it takes to get him to actually work on those things, nothing but good for Rutgers can come of it.

And no, he doesn't know more about his flaws than people on a message board. Seriously, people tend to think about the messenger more than the message and ignore the obvious because they don't like who is saying it. Happens all the time.

Either way, this doesn't concern me. Saying he's not ready is not "demeaning." But we need him -- a smarter version of him -- to succeed.

Three SHU players did the same thing yesterday, it doesn't register a blip on the radar...it's a free evaluation, not an indictment to pick apart the aspect of the decision.

Kentucky had their entire program declare last year....The key is the invite to the NBA combine, which is more of an indication of the NBA interest.

The faster the fan base gets aware of what actually happens, the better we become about not just RU, but the entire landscape of the conference.

I mention the conference because Sanders does have items to improve upon, just like every other player. And I can understand why Greene may be feeling the way he does on Sanders, but the staff has gotten vast improvement out of Sanders.

The next two years for Sanders are more about what can he do to improve his team as much as his own Pro/NBA aspirations. But I definitely don't feel Sanders is holding the roster back or taking away from anything as far as RU basketball, it's kinda hard to imagine any situation where RU improves it's image or results without Sanders being a key cog in that process going forward...he's pretty much transformed his game defensively in a very short time frame, I expect a more balanced and efficient Sanders next season.

And the fact remains there are about 4 to 5 Sanders-like recruits in the tri-state area as PG's that have the same traits as Sanders, that people here would be thrilled on paper to land as recruits......so as much as fans want to pin all of the default on the player not lifting the roster up faster, it's up to the coaches to adjust to being able to coach a more talented player to maximize the talent on the roster.....

The question is can Sanders eventually learn how to be like Michigan's Derrick Walton Jr or Purdue's young star PG Carson Edwards vs will he just become a stat guy like Rysheed Jordan (St. John's of 3 to 4 years ago) or Kentuckys Isaiah Briscoe, players who need to have the ball 80% of the time, to be effective....those players can look good on paper, but not register in the win-loss column.

program is now hostage......i wish he would leave and we'd be an attractive location for a 5th year point guard.
I'm tempted to say I wish you'd leave and the board would be a more attractive location, but I'm a really nice person so I won't. Most of us know the kid has flaws as a basketball player and declaring for the NBA draft even to get "evaluated" is folly. The areas for improvement are obvious for all and the chances of him even getting a 10 day contract in the Association someday are extremely remote but you go out of your way to slam the kid in just about every post you make whether you mention him by name or not. I really don't understand the venom. He's a 20 year old kid who plays basketball for our school and is the only member of our team to be recognized for his on court performance by media and coaches this year. Really wish you'd consider dialing it down a bit.

Greene is always on his case.

Combination of a few things, and probably not fair.

1. Bothers me that people see the team losing despite Sanders. I hate that people hold him higher than everyone else because of hype and expectations

2. I don't like his game. I don't think Corey is selfish, but he plays selfish. He doesn't make players around him better. If anything he makes them look worse by not involving them in the offense

3. Maybe I am a bit old school. Too cocky. Too showboaty. Seems to me to be about himself. I couldn't stand watching him dance at halftime as a freshman with the team down 30.

Again probably not fair. My honest take.

Everyone knows Sanders has more work to do. Just saying to leave the team though. It is whatever. This is only a message board.

Give the kid time. He has not yet reached his peak. And when he does, he will make the team better. I hope someone on the staff gets him there.

He could get to the NBA. He will need to make his changes, and they have to happen this off season.

I hope the kid trust himself, and the people talking to him, advising him on where to get better. People that actually want him to do well, not just benefit from it themselves.

Best of luck, Sanders!

how many times has he made a good pass and team can't finish or make open shot. Walton for Michigan is good but they make open shots. Ohio State game Corey made a nice pass to Thiam who actually made the shot.

Shields....I am sick of hearing that argument. Such a small impact. For every 1 recepient of a Sanders pass that didn't convert there are 10 empty dribble penetrations or turnovers.

Sanders never passes when penetrating hard to basket. Point guards you will watch on tv the next 4 days drive primarily to get baskets for others.

This "announcement" also allows RU to continue to recruit seriously for talent to help the cause for the upcoming season...that's a huge plus as the program looks to turn the corner.

I'd bet real good money Corey is back next year...but these types of things aren't always negatives, as we don't truly know what's been discussed or agreed upon behind closed doors.

What 5th year graduate PG will come here rolling the dice that Corey doesn't come back.

This will be the 3rd time he is leaving the program. 2 for the NBA and 1 for suspension.

If he has a remote chance to be on the NBA radar do for it. He isn't. It is a negative for his chances. What does a NBA GM think of Corey and his work ethic. He can't shoot and can't go to his left again and he is trying for an invite. Not putting the time in.
Since, according to you, Sanders is a lousy point guard and a net negative, why would a good 5th year PG that knows what it takes to run a team be dissuaded from coming here because Corey is still here? "3rd time leaving the program". How long have you been saving that one?

At this point Sanders would likely end up playing overseas and make a good living.
If he sticks with the team(& I think he will), develops key aspects of his game that people have alluded to....(short jumper, 3 point shots & making others around him better)
By Sr year he may well be a draft pick.....& make millions playing at home

If we recruit some Coach P 'scrappers" & a solid point guard
it will free him up to "do his driving thing" the media loves so much !

oh this again
Yeah, I agree that he's likely to come back. But he also strikes me as someone who will need only the slightest reason to leave, just some glimmer of hope. Wasn't last year the first time he spent a second straight year at the same school since before high school?
