Complimentary football

I’d never heard that phrase until Greg said it now I hear it everywhere. Did Greg coin the phrase or copy it?

We used that phrase related to high school football in the mid-90s. It was our way of gently telling an offensive play caller to not be an a-hole. My guess is that it originated around the time Buddy Ryan punched Kevin Gilbride on the sidelines in 1993.

It’s a term “old school” football coaches use when they don’t want to say “we need to run the ball more (exclusively), slow down the game and hope our defense bails out a bad offense”.

Maybe that's why it isn't working...we're looking for complimentary styles of football instead of complementary styles of football!

The Raiders defense complimented the Patriots Offense for its "decision making skills" during the last minute of the game.

It's when the offense says nice things about the defense, and vice versa. Compliments all around, except for special teams. No one says anything nice about them.
