Don’t lock anyone in permanently. We’ve made those mistakes way too often. We haven’t even had a .500 season yet.
When Pikiell came on they were on all on short-term deals (disclaimer: I have no idea what the "typical" CBB assistant coach contract is like):

Can't find anything more recent but my guess if they're probably on one- or two-year deals. Ask one of the nj.com guys, they're always happy to FOIA these things and breathlessly report how much the coaches are making.

The assistants other than maybe Hobbs have the desire to run their own program at some point. Just compensate them well while they are here. They know they will benefit from being part of the turnaround if this continues in the right direction. You realize of course this is the relatively easy part. Getting better record wise only gets harder as you go along. Add in expectations and all this love could diminish rather quickly.
Pike was extended 3 years last January. There is info on the details including performance bonuses and pool of comp for assistants in this link.

Uhhhhh so what? Most coaches would be out of here the instant they hit 500. Wanna wait til he and his staff is on the plane flying to a new school to coach too?
Forgetting about football for a minute, this is going to be a huge part of Hobbs’ legacy. He needs to be an excellent communicator with Pike and the assistants, and their agents.
I believe these guys are going to be in demand pretty quickly. Sooner than you think, Mario. Not sure exactly when, but that is Hobbs’ job, to make sure these guys know they are highly valued here by all constituents, to understand what these guys want in their careers, and make sure that can be achieved at Rutgers. And then to begin negotiations at the right time to lock them into the right contract.
Not easy, but if Hobbs has already established very good relationships with these guys, it isn’t very complicated either.
I never suggested not to negotiate extensions, Slappy. I just said the talk of lifetime extensions, although I know they were exaggerations, always get us into the same trouble. We're over the moon after a win and then back to Pike and his staff might not be the right guy when we have 3 straight losses.
Let's not forget that our freshmen class relatively weak right now compared to the rest of the B1G....mostly because it's one player....and I love Mulcahy more than most people on here. Fortunately, we're only losing one senior. Extensions are one thing but locking anyone in until the end of time is quite another.
The climb up from 6 or 7 Big Ten wins to 8-10 wins is very hard. We could easily finish with 7 big ten wins next year even though we have a better team.
I’m glad Pike and team doesn’t think like this. I bet you were one of the guys saying we could be better this year but not win as many games as last year.
Let Pike do his job. If so we will be top half next year and in the tourney.
What a stupid reply. Of course the players should strive to win every game and I love the job Pike is doing. My post was to point out the reality of the difficulty of climbing into the top half of the league and that people shouldn’t overreact if everything is not perfectly linear.
You make a point but I just don't think its relevant when the team is losing exactly one player, Dorson and getting a proven shooter and a freshman point. This is a young team and its young players have gotten a ton of experience and grown. We have the ability today to beat teams 5-9 in the conference. It would be shocking for our record to be worse than this year.

Anyway, I never said you said anything about extensions. All I said is that I think these guys will be in demand sooner than you think, from your post. It could be as early as the end of this year, if we continue to get some nice wins and the media keeps hyping our team and Pike.
Hobbs better not screw this up.
If a coaching staff leaves that's a sign of a good job. You don't want to be trapped in bad contracts. Too many ADs across the country do that. We already extended Pike through 2022-2023. I see the worm turning too but let's not forget the bad football contract hanging over our heads right now. If we go dancing next year, his deal likely gets torn up anyway.
I don't think it really matters whether the assistants are "locked up" or not. If they get head coaching opportunities, Pike and Hobbs are going to let them go without repercussion even if there is an additional year or two left on their RU contracts. Not to say they wouldn't try and keep them by sweetening their contracts, but they're not going to PREVENT Knight or Young from leaving to take a head coaching job.
They will probably sign the standard deal and if another program wants to poach them as an assistant that is when you match the offer to keep them.
A long term would not stop them from taking a Head Coaching job.

No the Ash extension was a clause in the contract for NCAA sanctions. With even the slap on the wrist we got it kicked in. Lesson learned. Don't hire a new coach to a guaranteed 7 yr. contract. It's an expensive lesson Hobbs is in the midst of learning.
