Every coach has a strength. Most fall into these categories:

1) Recruiter/Manager
2) Fundamentals/Positional Expertise
3) System/Innovator

Most probably fall into Group 2. The more high profile the school, the more you lean to 1. The lower profile, you go to 3. While everyone is dependent on talent to a certain degree, Group 1 is moreso, but they are more likely to be at a big time school so it's easier to get that talent.

Some coaches, like Saban, are both Group 1 and Group 2. Mullen, contrary to popular belief, was Group 2. Moorhead is Group 3, along with Rich Rod, Chip Kelly, Mike Leach, Gus Malzahn, etc.

This is meant to disprove this theory that "good coaches adapt to their talent". Well, some do, some don't. Like it or not, we have a guy who is not great at doing that, but if he can put in his own system (average payoffs start happening in year 2 or 3 it seems), he might could reach beyond the Jackie/Mullen ceiling. Jackie and Mullen were very dependent on the talent they could bring in. I still wonder why we were so fired up about trading a potential 10-win season (which we'd done before) in 2018 vs. a chance to get higher in a few years.

System guys, once their system is in place, it's easier to maintain. You can plug and play.
