Their QB looked awful last night. I think he would be a great fit in a Chip Kelly offense. UCLA may be just a tad bit too far from home.

He’s Dan Mullen in a weaker conference. His last Oregon team was 65% run, 35% pass.

I'm sure UCLA doesn't regret paying Chip Kelly all that money.

The PAC 12 has really fallen off. I'm not sure they deserve to be P5 anymore.

Strange comparison to make. Seems Mullen likes more brawn than Kelly, and also places more importance on what the quarterback can do. Kelly reminds me more of Rich Rod's old offense at West Virginia, or Gus Malzahn's original cut-up offenses. About the only similarity to Mullen I can make, besides being a run-based offense, was that Mullen did incorporate hurry up concepts into the offense later on.

Mullen is a QB coach, while Kelly, RR and Malzahn are play-callers. They all have the reliance on the QB run.

I’ve never quite understood the idea that Mullen is some great QB coach. Looking at the NFL, I don’t see it. He does a great job of getting a QB to run his system and to hide their shortcomings with his play calling. He hasn’t produced a long line of NFL QBs.

No one has a "long line of NFL QBs." There just aren't that many NFL QBs, and they come from all over.

He's coached Alex SMith, Tim Tebow, Cam Newton, and Dak. Not sure how much credit he should get for each, but I would think that's a pretty good list.

How many college coaches have coached more NFL QBs and how many of the ones that did were coaching at places that didn't tend to put out NFL QBs?

Silliness. He's made every QB he's coached much better.

You can hate on Mullen for many things, but this is not one of them. Good Lord.

How many polished passers has he turned out in almost 20 years coaching QB's? Two? Cam Newton could be a third if you count two seasons coached two years before he started a D1 game. Mullen is undeniably excellent if not elite at coaching up athletes to play the QB position in his offense, but it's understandable when people say he isn't necessarily a great developer of quarterbacks in general.

Should a college QB coach be judged on college or pro production?

Who else has turned out more than 2 NFL qb’s? I’d give him some credit for 3.5

I'm not even talking about NFL QB's, I'm talking about "good" passing college QB's who can somewhat consistently read coverages and make high to mid percentage throws accurately and on time. Some coaches produce guys like that every cycle (without any of them reaching the level of overall player that Mullen's best are/were). I can give him credit for three players under those criteria; Alex Smith, Cam, and Dak. Maybe a fourth in Tyler Russell, but I'm not sure he left us purely throwing the ball any better than when he arrived.

You can’t say that Mullen didn’t have productive QBs in college. His scheme was to use them however to score points and they did. Some of the most notable college qb’s have been coached by Mullen.

I wouldn’t say that. He is unproven and hasn’t gotten a chance. I’m not sure Moorhead is a qb guru. Haven’t seen much qb development from him yet.

I completely agree. As I said in my first post, he's absolutely among the best at developing players to play the QB position in his offense, which leads to some really good players and really good offenses. That doesn't mean he's consistently producing great passers, which is why I think it's fair to argue he isn't extraordinary at developing conventionally good quarterbacks.

Key word. conventional. I could give a rats *** if our qb throws well or looks like dan Marino as long as we move the ball and put up points. Don’t care if we throw the ball at all if we are moving the ball successfully and able to score. Thing is the game has changed so much and even now in the nfl more of the non convention qbs are making it and changing the game there. A lot more teams throwing in option zone read than they used to. Even the patriots have talked with Mullen to figure out some ways to make their offense different and find ways to move the ball. I like that Moorheads offense still utilized the quarterbacks legs. Just relies more on pinpoint accuracy downfield than Mullen’s did.

Mullen is a good coach. He’s not some great QB maker. He’s great at running his offense, with his people. Something any good OC does. Which is why Jo is getting away from the Mullen QBs. He wants his.
I see nothing special about QB development from Mullen outside of his offense.

His job isn't to create NFL quarterbacks, but if it's a byproduct, it's that much better. That said, Alex Smith and Dak alone make you look like a freaking retard.

You are moving the goalposts to suit your argument and still losing. Just move on from this topic. I don't like Mullen either and actively root against him, but he is an elite quarterback coach. That is his entire niche, it's idiotic to say otherwise.

Dang, I didn’t mean to hijack this into yet another Dan Mullen thread. I’m sorry. I should have known better. But a Chip Kelly offense is one Thompson could have a chance in at the P5 level, although Drebin makes a good point that the PAC-12 is pretty borderline on that.

I don't know if I'd go that far.In the right scheme KT can be just as good of a "QB" as Fitzgerald. Both are pretty flawed.

I truly loved and cheered for Fitzgerald but sadly he is no quarterback. I know it's not a popular opinion but I would add Tebow into that mix. I think Denver gave up on him too early. He needed a couple years on the bench. I think that's enough examples to agree Mullen does a good job with his quarterbacks. But wtf do I know ??

He gets full credit for Dak, partial credit for Smith (who he was only the position coach for, and only for 2 of Smith’s 3 years). He gets almost no credit for Cam, as you can only credit him for what Cam did at UF during mop-up for Tebow, which wasn’t much. He also gets partial credit for Tebow, but Tebow was not an NFL caliber QB (regardless of the dumbass Broncos thinking he was), so he’s really not even remotely in the same conversation as the other 3 guys above.

Even still, that’s an impressive resume. One NFL QB that he recruited, called plays for, and developed himself exclusively, another NFL QB who he did not recruit but did coach at the position level for 2 years, and another guy that he coached so well that he put up Playstation numbers, won the Heisman, and was drafted in the first round despite not having nearly the skillset needed to even be a serviceable back-up in the NFL. He does definitely know what he’s doing with QB’s. One of his problems here was that all but one of his QB signees were a bunch of poor man’s Tebow’s. He was able to get a lot out of Fitz, but his physical limitations in the passing game put a glass ceiling on the potential of the offense. KT would have been no different, had they both stayed.

What defines a quarterback though in today’s offensive systems. There are s ton of dual threat guys now and are based on the qb run. Everyone saying keytaon would have followed Tebow and fitz don’t know that and definitely if they did what the hell is wrong with that? Both are in the sec history books are produced a **** ton of offense.

I swear some of y’all will **** all over our own players. Don’t blame kt for leaving the way some of y’all have just thrown him under the bus.

I seem to recall Atlanta didn't think much of the older Favre. Some people are way too quick to come to judgments based on too little a sample size.

And what do you call what Tommy did at Penn State? Is it different because Tommy came here? Is it different because TS had just one year left instead of 2? If so...why?

He graduated at Penn State. He could go anywhere, and actually would have won the starting job there if he had stayed. KT didnt win the job and quit. I hate he is back on the team. Cant stand a quitter

You actually arguing his status as a graduate with eligibility remaining makes it different? You think teammates care what year you are in? We're not talking about leaving a school for academic reasons....we are talking about leaving one team you belong to so you can join another while eligibility still remains.

If you label KT a quitter, then you should consider TS the same. Personally, I don't have a problem with either young man pursuing transfer options. But you are out-of-line for calling KT a quitter while praising TS for, "quitting" on Penn State to come here. I think we're damn fortunate to have both guys on our roster. Keep in mind, it took TS years in Joe's system before he won QB1. As incoming freshmen, KT was the higher-rated, much more prolific passer and runner than was TS. Maybe KT just needs the same opportunity to be coached a while by Joe & Co. as TS got.

Yikes.....I guess we could bulldoze it and start over then. But on a lighter note did anyone ever hear anything regarding other teams being interested in KT ? I did not at all....but I didnt expect much. Tho he was outstanding in high school, I'm not sure how he got sidetracked here

Yeah you get robbed in Jackson, we were 5 times, get guns shoved in your face, twice, and get told you are going to get your brains blown out, once. Then tell me you work for the Jackson Visitors Bureau. I love what's happening to Jackson. Could not happen to a shittier place.
