CHARLESTON SOUTHERN BUCCANEERS 2-9 (0-0 Big South)
Ranking 339 (Massey) (UNC 24), NCAA NET 346 (UNC 16), RPI (Nolan) 351 (UNC 31), Torvik 348 (UNC 11)
Last Season 14-16 (10-6, 4th), 0-1 Big South Tournament; no postseason

It should be noted that the NCAA NET and Warren Nolan do not count games against non-D1 teams in their calculations.

Sunday noon’s game for #18/#16 and 10-3 North Carolina is with a familiar opponent, Charleston Southern. We have played them twelve times, the last time an 83-53 win in Chapel Hill as the season opener last season. UNC scoring was led by Ustby (18) and Donarski (14). That game was the first appearance as a Tar Heel for Blanca Thomas (8 points/6 rebounds) and Lanie Grant (4 points).

Carolina is 12-0 with the Buccaneers. They had, for them, a good season last year and at 10-6 were tied for third in conference. Big South is a nine-team conference, so every team has a home-and-away with everyone else.

For Sunday’s game Carolina is favored by 52 points (Massey), 41 points (Nolan), and 51 points (Torvik). The algorithms that produce spreads like these are always subject to some skepticism.

CSU was chartered in 1960 as Charleston Baptist College and is still affiliated with the SC Baptist Convention. Enrollment is 3418; it is a private school. Although called Charleston Southern it is actually in North Charleston. It is considered conservative by most college standards and students under 21 are “encouraged” to live on campus - in gender-segregated dorms. Their home attendance for WBB is just 397.

Like most schools in their position, they play a few P4 teams (for the money) and then a group of fellow mid-majors. They started with four straight road games, and all were losses: 84-86 to Jacksonville, 65-80 to Charleston, 62-91 to East Carolina, and 40-87 to Georgia Tech. The Jacksonville game went to overtime.

Next came four home games: a win vs. S. Carolina State 53-51, and losses to Georgia Southern 57-65 and Mercer 45-71. The fourth was an 83-62 win over Allen, a D-II school. The SCS win was on a lay-up with 0:01 on the clock.

The non-conference schedule wraps up with a trip to Wofford (L 42-70) and a visit from Clemson (L 52-78). The most recent game was with Furman, and the 9th loss 53-66. Contests (?) with UNC and Georgia remain. Thirteen n/c games are needed to fill out the schedule with just 16 Big South games, and to CSU’s credit four of them are against P4 teams.

Charleston Southern has a roster of 14, and 7 are returning from last year’s campaign although two, 6-4 senior C Saniya Jones and 5-10 GS G Laura Ortega, have not yet played. Leading scorer Cat Alben (16.6) is gone, so the new leading scorer is 5-6 redshirt junior PG Caelan Ellis (11.3 ppg). Ellis is one of the returnees as is Asha Sra, a 5-9 redshirt junior G (11.0 ppg/6.0 rpg). She leads in assists, steals, and at 5-9 blocked shots. Sra spent her first two years at Grand Canyon. The website does not say so but Sra is usually a Hindi surname.

Charleston Southern has two other double figure scorers, including one who played in last year’s game: 5-10 junior G Tyonna Bailey. She adds 10.3 ppg as a starter this year. 5-7 redshirt junior G Alaina Nettles also started last year and this year averages 6.5 ppg but is the leading rebounder with 7.5 boards.

The other player in double figures is Thelma Barbitch, a 5-10 redshirt sophomore G (10.0). She is a transfer from UTEP.

Once past these five, there are five more that can see action. These are Sydney Bradley, a 5-10 junior G (2.1 ppg); Aiseé Coulibaly, a 5-9 freshman G (2.1); Nevaeh Jones, a 6-2 freshman C (2.2); 6-0 senior G Alba Garcia (2.6); and Courtney Davis, a 5-4 GS PG (0.9 ppg). All of them except Couilbaly have picked up a start or two here and there.

There is also Mya Dotson, who has played in five games, but has started three of them. She is a 5-10 redshirt sophomore and had a similar employment pattern last year.

There is a nice international flavor to the roster. Barbitch and Couilbay are French; Garcia and the still-absent Ortega Spanish.

As is often the case with a 2-9 team, starting lineups can vary game-to-game as coaches search for a consistent effective lineup. With that in mind, the lineup for UNC based on the starters for the Furman game would be Nettles, Ellis, Sra, Bradley and Nevaeh Jones with Bailey and Barbitch quickly off the bench if they do not start.

Charleston Southern is picked as finishing fifth in the Big South. CSU may not be a P4 opponent but one thing they will do is shoot the 3-ball. They have 325 attempts so far – 30 a game – at 29.8%. More than half of their shot attempts – 325 of 634 are threes. Carolina also shoots the three, 324 attempts (25 per game at 36.1%) but account for only 38% of total shots. Ellis and Barbitch account for 54% of the threes taken and 64% of those scored (35.2%) so they are the two to watch.

Charleston Southern is coached by Clarisse White, in season #5. Her record there is 34-98. That may not seem impressive but her first two seasons produced 7 wins total so there is clear improvement, White has had multiple AC stints: Auburn, Wake Forest, Alabama, and Stetson. She is a Villanova grad (’07) where she played for Harry Perretta, the originator of the 5-out offense.

The Heels had a nice recovery Wednesday from the painful loss to Louisville and victimized UNCW with a 50-point shellacking. Not a pretty game overall but one that was needed. Another one can't hurt. December 29th things will get very serious with the continuation of ACC play

The game is 12:00 Noon Sunday and will be streamed by ACCNX. Go Heels through On Demand will have Matt Kraus’s call.

Hard all 40 minutes, Heels.

Either Elina’s or Liza’s Mom, Dad, and sister are here behind the bench. Really cool and special to get them here from Russia or Norway if so. Taissa’s parents were here a couple weeks ago.

10-10 at 1Q TO. Nyla Harris to the line for 2 after the break. Naturally, a 14% shooter hits a 3.

23-13 Heels after 1Q. Heels shoot 9-14 from the floor (4-7 from 3). 8 assists on 9 made baskets. Just 2 TOs- both deadball.

I know shots falling can make a team look better and I know this is just a 2-9 Charleston team but it feels like this team is playing with a different energy today. I like the defensive pressure and they aren't hesitating on their shots. They look and feel more fluid. Just need our pg to find her offense

Henderson comes up a little gimpy after that charge right before half. She tells Jodi, “I’m fine” as she is subbed out. A little 1:1 coaching form CB as well for avoiding the defender/flop as well.

Heels lead 50-25 at half. 19-30 from the floor in the half, 6-12 from 3, 15 assists on 19FGs. 5 TOS- all deadball. +9 on the boards. 10 TOs forced. That’s Carolina basketball.

Play the 2H strong and let’s roll into Christmas 11-3.

Now that is an in game adjustment that I have being talking about. If players are not bringing the energy, then sub them out and put someone in that will bring the energy and do what you told them to do. Way to go CB. That is what Dean and Roy would do all of the time with the blue team for those that remember that term on the men's team. CB is starting to get it now. She have too much talent now and this should put pressure on the starters to play her style of basketball.

The flu bug is going around. This team is going to have to pick it up. We cannot afford to lose this game and we cannot afford a team like this to gain any type of confidence.

We just let Charleston Southern hang 74 points on us, Charleston Southern! We lost!!!

Indya Nivar, seems to be reverting back to her old ways.

#3 for Charleston Southern has the speed of a Turtle, yet she just had a 30 plus against us.

Still missing Free throws.

If we don't come together it's gonna be a long Season.

That’s a 2-9 Charleston Southern team. Team looked like they’d rather not even be on the court today. We have too much talent to show up like this.

This game is going to hurt in the power rankings. Not helpful for our hosting chances. Missed Grant, for sure, but it looked like we went on Christmas break after halftime. SMH.

Not the best performance to state the obvious. Second half defense was the worst in the CB era. RK hit a couple of early 10-footers, so I thought her shot might be back-but no. Going to have to get much more from her and BT going forward to be the best that they can be.

IN played pretty good today. I do not know what you are talking about. NH and CT were missing bunnies underneath the goal. CT missed three in a row. They won by 19. I win is a win. I think that were thinking about Christmas after the 1st half. They relaxed and CS kept playing hard. This is what happens when you relaxed and take the gas off of the pedal. Hopefully, this will be a lesson learned moving forward. You have to end the game the same way you start it. Our team forgot that. The freshmen played very well today.

Well, we did score 93 points, and the game really was never in doubt.

That said, we missed several layups and if we make those it's a 100-point performance. Allowing an outfit like Charleston Southern, NCAA NET 346, to put up 74 points, is just not acceptable. Louisville, an outstanding team, only put 76 on us and that was with OT. We were outscored 49-43 in the 2nd half. Charleston Southern can put up 49 points against us in a half? Give me a break!

CSo was able to create driving lanes when our defense didn't help by closing down. I'd bet that Bailey and Ellis, in their wildest dreams, never thought they would score their career highs against UNC in Carmichael. They better put UNC on their Christmas card list.

Our next game is Boston College, a truly awful team. If they watched the highlights of UNC-CSo they must be saying "if CSo can do it, so can we"

They sure were pushing CB's limit of 76 in Carmichael.

DES used to say the starting 5 should be the 5 best defenders.

I am sure Coach CB will be taking a hard look at who is not getting it done on defense.

ACC play from here on out.

Rules question... with about 5 minutes left in the game, we missed a shot, and it appeared from my seat that Toomey knocked the ball out on the rebound attempt, but the refs awarded us the ball. The ref closest to the CS bench turned to their coach, and I'm fairly certain she said "do you want us to look at it?". I know the rules were changed this year to allow for a coach to challenge possession calls, but are the refs allowed to prompt the coach in that situation?

Awful half on defense. the game was actually closer than the final score indicates as we closed on a little mini-run. We kept getting beat at the point of attack and either collapsing the defense and/or fouling.

We were only +3 on turnovers; their guards played as well as ours, better if you include their #3 as a guard.

We won this game by being up 17 to 2 on off rebounds. That is the only stark differentiator. Take that out and this game would have been really, really scary.

Glad you mentioned fouls, there have been some bad ones lately that just weren’t necessary. I will say this, CS hit some shots, some well defended, that they will not make again this year. I do wish they could come over the break and teach our team how to hit those running hook shots off the glass. I love that shot.

A win is a win. A lot of teams yesterday that are highly ranked won, but they did not beat the team by 30 or more points. Case and point, we beat South Dakota State 83 to 48 and Texas who is ranked number 2 in the nation beat them 70 to 51. We beat them by 35 and Texas beat them by 19 which means all teams are going to have a game where they are not performing at our high level and they are not going to just blow all of them out. USC barely beat Cal last night. They won by 3. This proves that our players are not perfect and that we are only human. I know as fans, we want our teams to beat or blow teams like CSS out; however, sometimes we have to understand that the mid major teams or a lower D1 teams are going to play hard the entire game. Do you think those teams don't have pride and say we just go to just lay down and let them beat us by 30 or more points. I am here to say they are going to say no. The good news is we won the game by more than 15 points. We saw what happened to NC State when Rhode Island came to Raleigh and beat them. Hopefully, CB and Staff will make the adjustments and get us ready to play BC. We all know that BC has beaten us at their place. We cannot afford to have a letdown.

SDSU is a Quad 2 team. That was a really good win at that margin.

CsUbis a low Quad 4 team. It is not the end of the world to merely win but this result hurts our NET ranking
