What's the deal with Oklahoma State and not receiving OW? Pat Smith was the last winner. I only looked at 2005 when we had FIVE champions! The winner was Greg Jones. I don't remember his story but looking at the brackets only confuses me.

He wrestled five times and faced three unseeded opponents. He did have a tech and two major decisions over them. He had a 5-2 win over 5th seed in semi's and 5-3 win over 7th seed in the finals.

Esposito beat two unseeded, 9th, 5th, and 2nd seeds. He had two majors.
Hendricks beat three unseeded, 2nd and 4th seeds. He had two falls and a major.
Pendleton beat two undeeded, 9th, 5th, and 2nd seeds including a tech fall in the semi's. 10-5 win over Askren.
Rosholt beat three unseeded, 11th, and 5th seed.
Mocco beat 9th seed, 4th seed and 2nd seed.

What will it take for the next Oklahoma State wrestler to win OW?

Ringer not winning was criminal.

I could see and respect wiz getting it ahead of Alex alas wiz finished 2nd.

ESPN's coverage ran right over Alex. Guess you take the good with the bad.

Had Snyder stayed in RS Alex vs Jordan would have been the fetured and final matchup and he would have won the OW.

Because of the matchu at HE whoever won was going to get OW.

That is not a good reason. Pat Smith won four times and was OW one time. Jake Rosholt and Alex won three times and were never OW. Hendricks and Oliver never won.

To be fair Ed Ruth won three titles while Steiber won four and neither were OW.

Steiber did win his senior year.

Pendelton should have won it the year Jones won,

Still the most criminal one of all time was Jake Rosholt not winning OW his freshman year in 2003

Snyder beat a 2x champ with an 80+ win streak. He had a case for OW, but I will agree he was the beneficiary of hype. Alex had a very good tournament and beat the undefeated Big 10 champ soundly, he too had a case. Retherford had a fantastic, dominating tournament 3 falls a TF and a major decision in the finals.

If OW is supposed to be for the tournament only and not a season or career award I would have voted Retherford, Alex, Martinez, Snyder.

I agree with ctdub. Retherford had three pins, a tech and a 10-1 major over the No. 2 seed. Dieringer second. Unfortunately, the coaches who vote continue to forget that this is a TOURNAMENT AWARD. Not a one-match award, not a seasonal award and not a career award.

Last year, Brewer or Dieringer should have won. Stieber was excellent but had one match that was a bit of a struggle.
Pendleton should have won at least once -- dominating everyone for two straight NCAA tournaments, including 10-5 and 11-4 dominant wins over Askren, a four-time finalist and two-time champ.
Rosholt also could have won his senior year. John Smith should have won in 1988. Bonused everyone except 9-2 win in finals over four-time all-American. Ironically, if you watch the tape of that match you would see that the ref missed a two-point near fall. Didn't get around to the proper side to see shoulders being down and started count too late. Would have been 11-2 major.

Anyway, it is very frustrating to see coaches not think about the criteria.

It was a foregone conclusion this year. They hyped the 285 finals 20 times per day. I will say it was an exciting finals match at 285 but if it had been boring and a pushing match I think they would have awarded the winner the Outstanding Wrestler award.

What I couldn't understand is why Gwiz tied up with Snyder in the final 25 seconds while leading by two. Block, circle, take one or even two stall calls and he wins.

This is kind of why Alex should be considered for OW. I understand the reason they awarded it to Snyder I just don't agree. I also respect what Retherford did to his opponents. But you can't discount the pressure on Gwiz and Alex to win their third national title. It is rare air and I remember Pat Smith saying the last was the most difficult. The fact Gwiz lost could actually support Alex even more.
