Certain Posters Should be Ashamed

It has really pissed me off over the last 24 hours to read all these negative posts about Pike and the coaching staff. The combined experience on this staff has forgotten more about basketball than the collective angry mob will ever know.

Pike and Co did not suddenly become dummies when the calendar flipped to 2021. I was infuriated by a few posters calling for his seat to be warm - they simply do not deserve the pleasure to be fans of this team and obviously have a very short memory that this job has been a coaching graveyard for the past 30 years.

What has changed in the last 2 weeks is that guy's with injuries are being forced to play more minutes than they should be, and in a very physical conference, our best big man is being forced to play tentative as he has good reason to believe he is being unfairly targeted by the refs. Those calling for Pike to get T'd up and show emotion are just idiots, a technical foul potentially loses us games, and Pike is certainly not a shrinking violet on the sidelines.

Finally, as Pike correctly pointed out yesterday, we thrive on transition. When we get outrebounded, we can't set up our transition game, and additionally, the huge foul disparity doesn't allow us to play transition basketball either.

Mac is back, which improves our defense, depth and FT shooting, getting Cliff back will improve MYLES, and most importantly, having time off will allow RHJ Geo and whoever else might be hurt, time to heal. Our best basketball is ahead of us, those negative posters don't deserve a seat on the bandwagon when it starts back up

Pike is certainly not a shrinking violet on the sidelines.

Please expand on this statement. Seriously not a flame just curious your thoughts as I have never seen a Pikel lead Rutgers team in person only on TV.

Who said his seat should warm? That’s ridiculous He’s done a terrible job the last 2.5 weeks though. Good thing is there is still time time for pike and team to make us proud

Agreed. When there is adversity, some fans react with a short-term “sky is falling” mentality without looking at the big picture. If our players were as fragile as some of our fans, then we’d have a big problem. Fortunately, that’s not the case. Our guys are resilient and will rebound (pun intended). Perhaps some of our fans’ (including myself) expectations were too high, but I think we’ll be in a pretty good position at season’s end. With few exceptions, all good teams will have ups and downs during a long Power 5 season (especially playing in the B1G).

What’s happened is 3p % regression and bad coaching IMO

Or as was pointed out in the thread "Who we Are, Who We Aren't, we are not a good 3 point shooting team. I was corrected more than a few times by posters correctly pointing out that our % were way up since BIG play started, a few saying we were a Top 30 3 point shooting team What we are seeing now is that we are not as good as those numbers, and not as bad as we were the past few games. Conversely, we have always been a good rebounding team and a very good defensive team and there is no reason that should change in 2021.

As I stated after the first OSU loss, when we lose games this year, it's almost a sure bet we will be lamenting about missed easy FG/layups and free throw shooting. I didn't think we would be out hustled and out rebounded and that has been the case the past few games. Fully expect that to change VERY SOON

@bac2therac Do you know or is there someone accessible that would know which members of the staff are in charge of prepping for which opponent we are playing?

They all do.
Every coach from every sport watches tons of film of the next opponent and uses the knowledge to prepare

Reality is that we have a lot of bandwagon “fans”. We were pretty bad for decades and last years success and our early success this season brought a lot of new “fans” in. There’s also quite a few trolls that lurk these boards and stir the pot with the negative posts. Where were you guys during the Jordan, Rice, FHJr, Littlepage era’s when it was much worse. I get it, everything is not rosey right now, but I trust in Pike and the coaching staff to get us back to basics. Hopefully starting with D.

While I should know better, it’s absolutely shocking to watch our fan base respond

We lost 6 of 8 last year...including playing the worse half of basketball imaginable ...and the same fans complaining now has us asking about NIT tickets at the RAC

Except what did we do after a week regroup ? Had in the same week perhaps the most dominating victory against a ranked opponent in our history followed by winning on the road against a big ten team that has a 85-90% winning percentage at home in the last few years

Never as good as your last great win and never as bad as your last loss

The biggest current bashers will be refilling the bandwagon soon

Count on it ....

Don't know..maybe the mods can fill us in on that

Pike has mentioned more than a few times that certain assistants are largely responsible - i have heard him mention Hobbs (no, not that Hobbs - lol) on a few occasions. For those who remember, Pike was hired on a pretty low budget, and insisted on having the $$ to hire a good assistant staff even if that meant cutting his own salary, which he did. It is a pure testament to the man that he has been able to keep Brandin Knight for as long as he has, and Karl Hobbs who certainly doesnt need the $$ has stayed around. Also, Pike was very creative in keeping Shoes Vetrone around who has probably been our best or 2cd lest recruiter even though he is no longer an on court assistant coach

I don’t understand the question then.
But, why would certain coaches do certain opponents?
I’ve played sports all my life and don’t know what you’re asking?

Best practice in college bball game prep is you assign different members of staff to watch the film of a particular upcoming opponent, often times one to prep offense one to prep defense.

So if it’s Monday and you have games upcoming Friday and Saturday, you don’t all prep for Friday, play, and then just start prepping for Sunday on fri night/Saturday.

I.e. On Monday, Knight may be prepping offense for Friday while Hobbs is next door prepping offense for Sunday at the same time.

I’ll take a flier here and take a shot Zappaa is familiar with prepping and scouting opponents. Although I could be totally out in left field here.

I’m having to explain it to him, and happy to do it btw.

Same thing happens in football it’s why there such a big support staff and why it’s really important (amongst other reasons).

Also, Quality Control coaches have the responsibility for watching film and prepping scout teams . Assuming they report to a particular assistant coach who is in charge of that opponent

Caleb Geo Cliff Harper Young Mag all in and out with injuries and/or playing through injuries. That's a lotttt of changing. Hurts with continuity and chemistry with so many changes. This team will be more than fine. I'm not really worried as long as Cliff comes back

I really don't mind the fans who have been members for a while and out of frustration say some things from out of left field.
What I DETEST are the trolls with 12 posts over the last 3 years, who hop on the board, say something idiotic and then run away and hide. You have them here, on the football board and on the old CE board.

I'm often critical of many things RU athletics, but can't criticize the coach here for game prep, game management or even his personality. It's absurd to suggest he's too laid back. Coaches come in all shapes (Majerus), sizes (Thompson) and opposite personality (Tark/Amaker). It's not that.

I think Pike's recruiting and team depth has been subpar, especially at the 5 until Cliff got here. But Cliff isn't an offensive talent yet anyway. He's probably coached up most of the others beyond their expected level.

It's a tough conference, and virtually playing 4 on 5 on offense without any interior offense is a bad card hand to play. Relying on 3 point shooting isn't sustainable.

I’m kind of the opposite, I can ignore the trolls but when posters call the team “trash” and a poster who is a true fan and writes a postgame synopsis after every game “likes” that post, that pisses me off. You need to be a fan in the ups and downs. This team has given us a lot to be happy about over the last year and to agree that they are “trash” is inexcusable. They are not playing well right now. It happens. They know it, but they still deserve our support.

This post is on target -- as I have previously said " when the going gets tough certain RU fans get going" --- the saddest part is they are the most vocal when things are going well but the worst when there is adversity

I liked your post because fans are getting too negative, especially with Pike, Young, Geo

But, fans are also very frustrated with instances of poor hustle which we saw a lot in the last game, not going hard after loose balls along with poor body language and sulking

RuRahh, remember there are some clowns on the site who are pretend Rutgers fans. They are actually fans of other schools who have nothing better to do than come on our sites and be negative. It took me years to realize this. Some of them use Rutgers references in their names. Some are on here every single day and some only post when something bad happens-a kid drops out, a basketball or football loss to a minor school like Fordham or Temple. Just put them on ignore.

almost every team and coach goes through a "slump". I am willing to give coach pike some room to recover because he took a Rutgers team that was literally in the cellar of college basketball and brought them to at least competitiveness with similar programs. What we are witnessing I hope is just a step back on an otherwise trip to prominence.
