Cards win game 1 against UConn, 2-0. Funkhouser got the start and went 7 innings, giving up 5 hits, 5 BB's and 7 k's. Funk is now 8-2! There wasn't much offense but Cards got it done! Rosenbaum (2b) and Smith had 2 hits apiece. Sturgeon had 1 hit. Smith also had an RBI. No errors. Burdi came on for his 10th save.
This is a touchy subject, but up till now I have never really questioned Dan's judgment on things but it appears that either he is really desperate or he has just lost faith in our middle relief pitchers. Funk (as well as Ruxer have gone over 100 pitches recently) threw 133 pitches tonight. I think he threw 120+ last week. I know there is no direct relationship between the # of pitches and injuries suffered by pitchers, but TJ has become more prevalent lately. I just hope we are trying to protect these kids and their arms. They have a future. Time to get off my soapbox.
