I'd be a little surprised if he came back. Assuming Harper is gone, that means the entire class of guys he came in with (Harper and Mathis, plus Myles as a RS) plus Geo who he's been with for four years would be gone. Throw in that New Jersey is not his original home... sometimes it's just time to move on. It's like if you went to a party with your friends and you look around and they've all left, you start thinking about grabbing your jacket.

I've waffled on this but I think I would like it if he did decide to come back. But I'm not expecting it.

If he's on the fence wait til we see how the season plays out. Pretty much what I expected anyway. Has to weigh his options. Hope he returns

No doubt. Surprised this was leaking out/being reported on at this time though
Isn't this about the time last year that people starting asking Geo and JY and Myles about returning? Like reporters specifically asking the players, I mean.

Anyway it would actually come as a big surprise if he knew either way. He'll talk to the coaches about what his role would be on next year's team etc before making any decision, and I'm certain Pikiell isn't having those conversations until after the season.

Nailed my thoughts exactly. All his homies are gonna be gone next year and he's not from NJ

Flip side is maybe he wants a bigger role and be more of a leader? His role likely stays the same and it will be Paul's team.

I'd lean to think he doesn't come back but who knows

On the fence can be seen as a good thing, no? Normally he’d graduate and move on in life.
Don’t think it’s a good thing when high end professional ball isn’t an obvious option but in other situations sure why not

Yeah, I'd love him back in (ideally) a slightly smaller role. That might not be what he wants, which is perfectly reasonable. In that case, no hard feelings about him moving on,

It'll be interesting to see how Senior Day is handled. Right now, only Baker, Nathan, and Gonzales-Agee will be honored. Makes no sense honoring Harper and McConnell unless they officially announce prior to the PSU game that they are not returning.

If he comes back, we can throw out an absolute defensive juggernaut lineup of:

Miller/Mulcahy
McConnell
Mag
Hyatt
Cliff

Not a lot of scoring would be happening there for either side haha.

I sure hope he comes back, but we really need Jones and his scoring ability as evidenced by the above. If he transfers we’re definitely in deep doo doo - we probably are anyway.

From a developmental standpoint... if Caleb returns, this probably impacts Mag the most. I see Mag as the heir to the lock down tough defender tough gritty role Caleb has now

Mag has the body type but his defense has been pretty poor relative to the rest of the team so far imo. Interested to see what pike will make of him down the line.

Didn't they honor Baker last year?

Disagree. Mag plays great defense and one of the best on the team for sure. Elite defensive potential
Feel free to disagree but he’s 8th on team to scholarship players in drtg and 10th in dbpm. Certainly 100% one of our lowest performers defensively without question.

If he can come back, I hope he does. In exactly the same role he's had the past couple years.

When RU's defense is at it's best, he's an integral part of that. And I don't really think anybody else, currently on the team, will be quite as good at doing the sort of stuff he does.

Miller appears poised to be a great defensive player (who will hopefully develop as a shooter as well). But I don't think he'll be quite as good, off the ball, as Caleb.

Don’t want to turn this into a miller thread but do want to say it seems extremely premature and arguable incorrect to say miller is poised to be a great defensive player. Either way, definitely not in the stratosphere of McConnel

Ignoring viable areas of talent acquisition is a truly bad idea.
Pike is not ignoring it. Coach Thompson said at the Court Club meeting earlier this week, in this day and age, the portal is something paid close attention to. Simply, Pike does not like kids who think they are entitled. Earlier this year, at another meeting, Pike said he spoke to players in the portal interested in coming to RU, but was not keen on their demands before stepping on the court on campus.

Oh if he was still parroting that same canned line that he was saying before the season then fine. I didn't believe it then and I don't believe it now.

Caleb should text Myles Johnson and Mathis and Young and ask about how transfer treated them.

If he thinks he'd get a green light to shoot someplace else with how he shot here earlier this season I would not trust that offer. He will get a fair opportunity here to be a shooter next year. Paul has to pass to someone... it cannot all be to Cliff (though how fun would that be).

Caleb just needs to work on his shot all off-season. He needs to get that back. These last couple games he has been more disciplined and has shot much better.

Maybe the story is, INCOMING or OUTGOING transfers, it will be all about the NIL. It is easy to promise shots, minutes, etc... and then tell them the promise was based on the performance level they were supposed to bring to the deal. I am not saying coaches will LIE, necessarily, but players should realize they have to deliver for the promises to be kept. And what that really means is that these promises are not set in stone. (on the football side of thing, maybe Noah Vedral's was?)

Seems Pike means it. For example, Hyatt has no problem jacking up as many shots as possible while he’s on the court, without defending well. As a result he doesn’t play much.

(PS: I happen to like Hyatt and think he was a good get for us in the portal, I just hope he buys in to what Pike wants from his players so he can play and contribute more)

By what standard is Hyatt not defending well? How do you think he is performing defensively within the context of the other non-McConnell players on the team?
