Pretty clear that we are not going to get much on player progress. We will want depth chart type info and the coaches are going to be stingy with it. I’d say they view the players that I’ve already been on a depth chart and those that are emerging or perhaps will emerge as one year free agents. Good to hear that Javin is a full-time practice player. Butler also talked about wanting to be able to use Singelton in variety of packages. Why didn’t anyone ask about the Rover position?

I like your analysis. Very sound. I do hope you are wrong, however, on player progress. We shall see. Thanks!

Yes, we need more contributions from inWV. I also enjoy his thoughtful posts. Much better than the "he sucks" commentary from a couple of the slow blinkers on this board.

I wonder if they are even going to have a spring depth chart (even internally). Maybe they will try to keep everyone in the dark as part of their brain storming session to lessen the likelihood of key portal losses.

That was my thought. Don’t announce a depth chart until you are down to 105 and the portal is closed.

I think the kids have a good idea of the pecking order. There will be some portal entries of kids they’d like to stick around. Tampering is just gonna be a thing until they figure out a way to issue contracts that are binding, keeping a lid on progress of players penciled in as depth/rotational pieces is going to be the status quo.

Yep whether the have an official depth chart or not as you say most kids know where they stand. Unfortunately we like everyone will lose kids to the portal we don’t want to . And I agree the biggest issue is not necessarily NIL out of control it’s the unlimited transfers that are out of control.

I find the Rover situation interesting. Domann was essentially a Rover, and then Gifford. Not much talk about the position now. Both McCullough and Buddha Wright have the chops to play that position. I wonder if they roll with more of a 3-4 alignment on early downs, as those two players are versatile.

It seemed like in NY Butler was way more aggressive with bodies in the box on the early downs than TW ever was .

DP,

With NIL, there is absolutely no reason to release any information than the upcoming schedule. Rhule already said this. I agree!

WV is always solid with opines, his analysis, insider info, outsider info, and knows the game.

Since I have joined the board a few years ago, WV quadruples his posts as we get closer to August.

Just my two cents.

I don’t think they are going to have a “rover” from what I heard. I think they will have a NB when they need to cover a WR and will have 4 true DL or 3 true LB plus the Jack when the NB is off the field.

Having a tweener guy playing Rover and getting exposed in mismatches, usually on 3rd downs, is not very ideal.

My first memory of NU football was listening to my dad and older brother watch the first title game against LSU half asleep when I was six, then watched them destroy Bama the next year. As for the current team, Rhule has upgraded the staff, held onto a lot of the young talent he recruited, and had a very nice portal class. They have two coaches with OC experience and three as DC if Snow is counted. Seems like a collaborative, professional group. Raiola wants to be a high draft pick, and will do the things required to be in that discussion. WR room is an upgrade and they have multiple guys with starters experience on the OL. We’ve seen fewer false starts penalties, and the days of the Defense not being able to get lined up correctly are long gone. Holgerson is a solid play caller and given he has no road responsibilities as a recruiter, he’s been able to basically be a mad scientist on the offensive playbook . I am optimistic.

Once again, WV is a top-notch poster with tons of history AND knowledge. Love it!

No they'll probably just guess about who the next guy in should be.

What was up with the Ekeler question? Seemed to catch Butler off guard.

Reporter asked what involvement Ekeler is having on the D? Butler stumbles a bit and says he’s not sure how to answer that question and then states that he was the special team coordinator.

It was an odd question.

Given that they have a coach for the Jack psn and one for the other LBs, I doubt Ek is spending much time there. He has more than enough to do on the ST side, given that he was brought in to overhaul it.. I'm sure he talks to those guys about what he sees from the LB group and of course linebackers are valuable in kickoff coverage. Butler seemed like he was going to answer the question one way and then thought better of it.

No it was a dumb question ( typical reporter these days) Nebraska has 2 coaches ( Davorak and Phillip Simpson) coaching LB.

Anyone who played sports knows the depth chart isn’t usually a surprise to the players. They know who’s playing better and deserve to be at the top and bottom.
