Bruins subdue Oscar Smith

Western Branch defeated Oscar Smith 5-1 to reach the Monitor Merrimac Conference championship game. The win also simplified the two conference region playoff bids

by turning the Woodside-Grassfield semi-final matchup into a region elimination game.


The Bruins scored four runs in the 5th inning to break the game open. Grant Maiorana ripped a double past the 3rd base line

which scored Jordan Mason who reached second on a single and steal. Senior Zach Rutherford followed with a single ake the score 3-0. Both he and Alex Abbey

scored on a double by Kyle McPherson that extended the lead to 5-1.

Colin Selby pitched five innings to earn the win. Selby allowed three hits while walking six Tiger batters. Corey Urban-Kiak and Zach Rutherford sat down the final six batters to end the game.


Oscar Smith took a 1-0 lead in the top half of the 1st inning with two early walks and a RBI single by sophomore Wyatt Cantrell which scored Daniel Quan.
