Over 4 games he’s averaging 7 points per game and 2.3 rebounds per game and shooting 60% from the field. With Rutgers focus on defense and rebounding he would send us in the wrong direction. He would improve our free throw shooting.

If this is what we are discussing on an RU message board, we have problems.
What should be discussed is the bullet we dodged in not ponying up despite many fans equating his departure to the sky falling down. It’s early but so far looking like Pike got this one right. I’m sure we spent every penny available so it’s safe to say the rest of our talent would be even worse if we shelled out 800k to prioritize Lathan and stick with an offense focus. Lathan can’t be the nucleus of a D first team full stop.

The free boards aren't exactly buzzing with traffic. If someone wants to talk about anything peripherally related to Rutgers hoops, I'm OK with it.

But to your point, I'm ambivalent. If he performs well or poorly, it doesn't matter to us except when we play UW.

He’s following in Paul’s footsteps……
Paul left because he knew he wasn't going pro and Washington gave him life changing money. How do you tell a kid not to take $400-$500k to stay at Rutgers. If we had the money he would have stayed and that team would have been much different. Our guards were too small and could never get the ball to Cliff.

When I heard what type of money he was getting, that’s when I knew we were screwed in the portal last season. It was very clear last year that he wasn’t big enough to play the 5, and not athletic enough the play the 4. People can talk about positionless basketball, but at a certain point you have to match up against someone an unfortunately for Lathan, he was a major liability on defense. It’s just crazy to me that someone who is very clearly not a B1G player was highly sought after in the portal

Agree, but he is a Big10 bench talent or mid major starter….not worth starter bucks.

In auctions, and transfers for NIL are exactly that, winning bids overshoot market value. Lathan to the winning bidder is a great example of that.

The reality is though, that opponents’ incoming NIL transfers will similarly underperform relative to the $$ so the overpayers aren’t at a competitive disadvantage.

Whatever number you heard about Lathan don't believe it. Agents are throwing out crazy numbers to drive up the perceived value of players. Next time they approach a player they'll say " I got Paul Mulcahy and Lathan Somerville $500k, sign up with me". Lol

When it comes NIL numbers being floated listen to Rick Pitino:

“First of all, everything is exaggerated,” Pitino told Zagoria. “I hear these numbers, and it’s not proven. Unless it’s proven, it’s not factual. , nobody knows that, nobody’s confirmed that.

Lathan:
Defensively: inexperienced and mental lapses, but I didn't think it was lack of effort; a couple of inches short;

Offensively: can't remember a big at rutgers with better interior game.

Whether it was effort or not he was an extremely poor interior defender. So much so that any contributions he made on offense were offset entirely by it. Teams literally scored at will at the rim last season.

I haven’t been following Washington but the box score tells all you really need to know about where he’s at right now. Frank Kepnang rebounds the ball and protects the rim. That’s likely why he’s playing 32 minutes and Lathan only 17. As it was Washington gave up 93 points to Southern University.

For us, we no longer have an elite guard who can feed the paint. Did you see what happened to Cliff’s offense in 2023-24? An offense first center wasn’t going to help us this season. We can’t allow easy interior baskets. We’ll never be competitive in that case.

I think it was actually a lack of effort on defense for him.

He didn’t even know (or care) to stand in a defensive ready position, or box out consistently. He would usually just stand in the paint with his hands at his side, which would cause him to have a delayed reaction, and often commit a poor foul. It drove me crazy and I also blame the staff.

I actually think he could have been better defensively than he was if he had cared / put in more effort.

Cliff's offense was lobs.

Did you read what I said about Lathan's defense: inexperienced, mental lapses (aka, lack of focus), a couple of inches short? Far from praise.
Offensively, very talented.

Nothing about what we can or can't allow this year.

Looks he made the right decision then to get paid — for some of these kids all they will get is college and maybe playing time overseas (see Mulcahy). Best to get paid where they can

It sounds like year number 3 will be at school number 3.
He went to Washington to get paid . Not sure he realized that Washington brought in this German freshman that is killing it and is being discussed on draft boards and is the main center and taken a ton of his minutes and might be a one and done. Kepang the other center has been injury prone throughout his career and healthy this year and is a shot blocker , rim protector , so he is playing as well. Lathan is the third center now.

I think this is pretty far off base. Paul left mostly because his role at RU was going to change - less play at PG.

He played only 4 minutes in their most recent loss to Seattle…. I think the German kid and Kepang both started. Clearly he wasn’t the choice player to come in and spell either one of them. Hes undersized for center and his D just isn’t good enough.

Hard to win when your competition's 3rd guy makes more than your starters...by a lot.
