While betting can be a fun thing for people when done in moderation, it's gotten totally out of control. It feels like a third of the ads on the radio are for sports gambling, not to mention all of the explicit and hidden ads on TV. To your point, you don't know what athletes are getting paid to make certain things happen on the field/court and that sucks for sports fans who presume that athletes are trying their best on each play.

Funny story:

Yesterday, just before the Giants-Bears game, I bet the following parlay:
- Bears beat the Giants moneyline
- Kyle Monongai scores a touchdown anytime during the game
- Kyle Monongai has 40 yards rushing

It was $5 to win $21.

Then the game starts and Swift is the starting running back. So I'm annoyed at myself for not doing any due diligence that Swift was back from injury. At this point, I'm given the option to cancel the bet in return for $3. So I do it and take the $2 loss. So within 10 minutes of all that happening, the Bears are winning, and Kyle Monongai has a touchdown. So of course, I'm cursing myself or canceling the bet. Well, as it turns out, Swift plays most of the game and Kyle finishes with only 28 yards. So I would have lost the bet if I kept it.

Conclusion - don't bet spontaneously. Know what you're getting yourself into. Oh and agree prop bets where someone can cheat without screwing his team mates (i.e. throw a ball on the first pitch of the game) should not exist.

Everyone with a pulse over 30, who isn't already a gambling addict, recognizes that legalized sports gambling is going to have one of the most destructive societal impacts over the next twenty years. That it hasn't been completely banned by Congress is proof to how out of touch and on the take your elected representatives are. It's right up there with not banning telemarketing (which there isn't a human being in the country who doesn't own a telemarketing company that doesn't want telemarketing banned).

Friendly bets for small amounts between friends , or a few dollars on the ponies at the track is alright.
But not the internet bookies that have replaced organized crime as the main way to lose the farm betting from the comforts of home or office.

The crazy thing is just how much could these players be getting paid to do this? It isn't like the old days where professional players needed 2nd and 3rd jobs. Some of these guys are making 8 figures a year and pretty much all of them well into 7 figures.

The prop bets are by far the easiest to corrupt. It is almost the only way a play can completely control what happens. On a normal game bet - sure, a player could fake an injury but that still does not change that their backup could have the game of their life.

These Commissioners should all be out on their asses.

Agree and they need all sports to make any athlete betting on their own sport a 2 year unpaid suspension and if on their own team- lifetime ban and contract voided

I don’t bet on sports so I was sort of wondering what type of prop bets he was cheating on as they said it was about a specific pitch and show him basically throwing the ball 50 ft..,
If anyone is even making bets like that- they need to rethink their life choices
