Just a throw in topic with not much going on. What was the best year your team have.
Wow that is saying something! Is there places where an out of stater like me can see stories or seasons on these teams? I can’t wait to hear about all of them on here. This should be a good topic. Was the Streeter boys on 1A teams lol? I love hearing about them! Was Robbinsville’s best teams when the guy that almost got his arm cut off with a chainsaw and still played that season played? I can’t wait to hear these stories lol!!I would say for Murphy, it would be the 1987 team. That team was a man amongst boys that year and arguably the best 1A football teams of all time.
Streeters played at Sylva Webster and were 2A. School consolidated into Smokey Mountain HS.Wow that is saying something! Wow!! Was Gentry his coach? Do I have that right? Gentry was the Murphy coach who has the record for state titles? He just retired a year ago? He must have really had some special athletes come through that program.Streeters played at Sylva Webster and were 2A. School consolidated into Smokey Mountain HS.
Murphy had Carl Pickens was on the 1987 Murphy team. Was a Parade AA. Played ten years in the NFL after a very impressive career at Tennessee.
I can’t wait to hear all these stories! Seems funny how schools have success in cycles? Good for a few years and then a rebuilding period and then repeat. Then there are the special few that the cycles seem shorter and closer together with a title or two thrown in every hood run? Now I got to google where Albermarles school is and history, lol!?Many think Albemarle's best teams were the 2001-2003 1A state champs. The 1957 team won the Western NCHSAA and had the most talent of any Albemarle team. The list of accolades is impressive. A future NC State All American, AFLer (career shortened due to injuries in Viet Nam), UNC team captain, the voice of the Tar Heels for 40 plus years, the voice of the Blue Devils for 40 plus years, the CEO of First Union. A lot of players from the team had strong college football careers and were very successful in life.
Ok thanks. I just thought for some reason I read an article when he retired he held the record for most state championships as a coach. 1 at a school before he came to Murphy and then the ones there? I saw where Robbinsville had won the most team titles in the state. So a coach there must have a bunch of titles to his name too?Gentry doesn't hold the most state titles in the conference but does have 7 or 8.
