Is it a given that he’s on the mound tonight? I don’t think you can risk ending your season without him on the mound. But Ben M. said something during the vandy game that made sense to me. He was talking about Leiter starting for vandy today and said if the goal is to win a national championship then saving leiter for game 1 makes the most sense. I could see Lemonis having similar thoughts regarding Bednar.

Vandy is not playing today. They got a free pass to championship series. Whoever plays them is almost assured a major disadvantage as they have decimated their pitching staffs.

This is the right approach.

Target goal is probably 80 pitches. It will be hard to get 5 with that since he's a swing-and-miss guy, but if you can, he should be able to come back on Wednesday without losing too much.

You’ve got to start Bednar tonight. If we win, Macleod has got to give us a strong effort on Monday against Leiter. Both teams will be piecing it together on Tuesday (even Vandy as Rocker would only be on 3 days rest if they pitched him), then you have Bednar on 3 days rest against either a 4 day rested Rocker or Sunday guy / Johnny Wholestaff for Vandy. Of course, if we’re up 9-0 in the 5th, get Bednar out of there.

Game 1 of the title series will be critical. All eyes will be on Macleod if we win tonight.

You have to play to win today, but in an ideal situation Bednar is capped at 80 pitches. He could then pitch Wednesday. Also, if Sims is at 45 pitches or fewer tonight he should be good to go Monday.

But you have to win today. If necessary, we will burn Bednar.

You can be strategic and unorthodox when you have a row of elimination games upcoming. But the goal, when facing elimination, is to maximize your chance to get to the next reset point. And then you figure it out from there. So we are all in tonight to get back to having to be beaten twice. Bednar will go as long as he’s effective and the game outcome is in question.

We were stupid for not pitching him last night. He is only gonna pitch once against Vandy and it doesn't matter if its Monday Tuesday or Wednesday. But he won't even get to do that if we don't get there. Scared to use him up on Friday night but now look at our situation. 5 runs should have been enough to win that game

Spot on, Ralph. We are on even footing with Vandy right now had we thrown Bednar yesterday. Will be at a huge disadvantage now. About 3 innings of Bednar in Game 3 of the finals is the extent of what we will have now. But we can still win it all. But we will need some good fortune to do it.

To win it all, you’ve got to have someone not named Bednar or Sims step up.

McCleod is the obvious choice after Fristoe caught Cerantolaitis but he threw bp the other night and hasn’t pitched well in 2 months. I don’t get the warm and fuzzies thinking about it but someone has to step up. I was pissed last night Sims didn’t come in but after some reflection, a championship caliber team has to have more than 2 guys to depend on. I mean we’re a win away from playing for the national title and we’ve done it with literally 1 starting pitcher we can count on. And even he’s had a couple awful starts. Maybe I need to swallow some pride and realize Lemonis and staff knows what they’re doing. Still gotta have an unknown step up though.

This is 100% true. But when you don’t know who is the one who will step up, then you have to save that gamble when you have some margin for error. You get that once it resets to best 2 of 3. But right now, you have to fire our best bullets.

My issue with that is we didn’t lose because of starting pitching last night. It was a 3-2 game in the 7th inning, would have been hard to expect much more than that from Bednar on shortened rest. There is an assumption that if we threw him yesterday we would’ve won, well what happens if you throw him and lose?

I would rather have him today for the if necessary game that is now necessary, and if you win then maybe you can start him if it goes to Wednesday or use him in a relief role on Tuesday.
