He was really effective situationally, knows the system, and is healthier and in better shape than he's ever been. We also have an open scholarship already.

There would be absolutely zero reason to think we'd get someone better than Doorson right now and then we'd have even less continuity after having turned over most of the roster already

Totally agree with you. You could have LeBron James playing for Rutgers and someone would declare Peter Nobody would be a better fit.

Hmmmm. I would totally love that scholarship open if we can get something more useful. If not he is serviceable in his role
We already have a ship open. You’re not going to find another 22-23 year old center this late in the process. We got very lucky with CJ Getty’s. I have no idea why there are people who want his ship open.

To be honest I didn’t realize we had a ship open, I thought we were full. So with that knowledge yea we can use him as a backup with experience

Shaq will play a key role this year. I liked what he brought to the table last year especially later in the season.

Played solid interior D, had a couple big boy put backs and stayed healthy.

Him/Shaq/Duke are gonna be a nice little rotation for us.

You said Him(Doorson)/Shaq/Duke. Are you saying you see Shaq Carter at center? I don't at all. He is apparently 6'8", and there is also just no room in the rotation. In addition to Duke and Doorson, you have 6'10" Johnson who when all is said and done may be the best of the three as early as this year. I don't see a ton of minutes for Carter frankly. I could see Doorson starting and playing 15 minutes, and Johnson and Duke around 13 a piece at center, subject to matchups and who is playing best. Carter will get 10-15 minutes exclusively at the 4 behind Omoruyi, and that might get cut into if Pike wants to have Thiam at the 4 sometimes. That doesn't even include Ron Harper at the 4. Goes without saying some of the above guys won't be thrilled with their minutes, but that is where you want to be as a program.

Forgetting Myles Johnson who might have the most upside of any of them.

You got me all wrong. I want him to stay and it appears he will. I just meant if he wanted to he could leave for a team more likely to make the NCAA Tournament who needed a big.

I figured he was on the 5-year plan to graduate (nothing at all wrong with that). Just didn't realize he'd be done in 4.

That was more in response to someone else who replied after you saying he'd "love to have that scholarship open" which he later amended when he realized that there was one open.

Yes i incorreclty wrote Doorson twice. I think Shaq will for sure get minutes at the C. We had times where Freeman and Eugene were the two bigs on the court.

All depend on matchups. I do like the rest of ur analysis. I do think Carter will get solid minutes.

Forgetting Myles Johnson who might have the most upside of any of them.

Yeah, forgot about the big fella. So many new faces its going to be quite the interesting year.

He looks a ton more fit than when he stepped on campus and hopefully the reports out of practice are true. He will be an asset.

I believe Carter will get more than 10 mpg. I expect him to play closer to 20 mpg and he is a center. I don't doubt he will get some time at PF but he is a center.

unless you expect Doorson, Doucoure and Myles all to get 10 or less minutes per game, you won't see Carter at center much. FWIW, Doucoure averaged 13/mpg and Doorson averaged 12/mpg. Both should be improved, and then you have Myles Johnson.

So if Shaq Carter plays 20 mpg next year, I'd expect it to be mainly at PF, like maybe 15 MPG there, and 5 MPG at center max. Eugene got 21 MPG last year, mainly at PF.

I know everyone wants a stretch 4 and smaller line-ups, but interviews with Pikiell sound more like he's going for some interior scoring with the big men to hopefully have people sag off a team that will have better shooters at the 1, 2 & 3 spots next year.

You need to play your best players as many minutes as possible. I suspect at least OOC you will see a lot of small lineups. I would like to think the majority of 4 minutes against the weaker teams will be Harper or Issa at the "4"

I know you've expressed that before, but some of Pikiell's quotes have made it seem like that's not the plan. Also, if you give them most of the minutes at the "4", then what's left for Eugene and Carter? Those are supposed to be two of your best players, too. And if you give them all the minutes at the "5," than when do Doucoure, Johnson and Doorson play? Isn't it important to get them minutes against the weaker teams so that the team can gel against actual competition before playing against better teams and throwing those 3 to the wolves?

The team only has 5 scholarship players returning that saw the court last year... Geo/Issa/Omoruri that saw real minutes, and then Doorson/Doucoure that combined for 25/mpg. You need to give minutes to Doucoure (your 4* recruit that started most games last year) and Myles Johnson (legit big that you've been raving about) so that they gel with the new people. Doorson I can see only playing against bigger teams, like last year, due to matchups... but at some point its hard to see more than 15 open minutes at the 5, even against weaker teams, which also means you're unlikely to see a ton of open minutes at the 4 due to Omoruri/Carter...

I'm not really disagreeing with you in theory, I'm just trying to work out the numbers in my head and wondering how deep Pikiell is really going to go into the bench. Last year he went 9 deep with players getting 12+ MPG (obviously skewed by some missed games due to injury), or 10 deep if you count Souf's 6.7/mpg. This year we've got 11 players, all of whom are expected to play some role... last year the backcourt seemed overworked... not sure how it shakes out

I have said it in other threads but I am really interested to see the style we play this season.

With a lot of depth(except point) we could play high pressure trapping defense and faster offense. That would lead to rotations and substations.

Yeah, it will be really interesting. And we could see a lot of small line-ups like FIG is saying, especially if we're trapping, I just wouldn't want the bigs to not get game experience if they're going to be needed in the conference schedule. I'd love to see more trapping and running off turnovers. That also gets you open looks from 3 in transition.

I believe prior to Myles injury which halted all his bigger schools recruiting him for a bit he was a very very promising prospect. The red shirt could pay dividends like many are stating and he could be big.

I’m so damn excited for this group of young talent. Pike is the man

Perhaps finally we have issues that other programs have.....not having enough minutes for guys!

Unfortunately for doorson, when we face a OOC foe with a mobile 6’7’’ center I see only token minutes.

Whether there should be or not I think there will be some urgency to win all the most win games. Other programs may use OOC as a glorified preseason and give players chances.

Shaq Doorson true value comes in B1G games. He has the height that no one on roster has.

Yes, there will be games that Doorson will not play much, like Indiana and Illinois where the opposing offense is not a good fit for him.
