I'm not sure who to blame for our lackluster RB's. They sure looked better once Dana started calling plays and deciding who got carries. At this point I'm willing to give Barthel a fresh start with a competent OC. A three-year contract though, not sure about that....

I’m ok with giving Barthel some more time to see how can do with a new OC. Not sure we needed to give him an extension? But if other schools were after him (why I don’t know 🤷‍♂️) I suppose we probably had to give him an extension to keep him. I guess…

Extension or raise but I wouldn't have done raise and 3 or contract

I’d bet the 3-year came from the leverage from Penn St & Texas. An extra year of money is security.

As for the poor RB game, my assessments are: poor vision, poor play calling, poor blocking.

I think some of it has to do with feeding Dowdell more than they should have. I have always felt his field awareness/vision is below average. We all know our OL wasn’t something to brag about, but I saw several times there was a hole big enough for a school bus to reverse into and Dowdell instead ran a different direction into the *** cheeks of his own lineman.
I also think the play calling was very poor, specifically from Satterfield. So many times we passed on 1st down and set up 2nd and long, to 3rd and long. We hardly used the run game to get a rhythm with the offense.
Poor blocking, specifically from the perimeter players, hindered RB production as well. Plenty of second level defenders were untouched or interrupted and were making plays near or behind LOS. OL blocking also has to improve and get to the 2nd level as well. We saw glimpses of it the last 3 games. Lean on your OL to wear down the defense. Against schools like UTEP, you can wear them down in 8 minutes. Against schools like Iowa, Boston College, and better, it may take 50+ minutes. It just seems we never committed to the run game at all in the season in a way that made sense.

Sorry for the daily diary.

So the RB coach who some number of posters think is a putz had his coaching tires kicked by a couple of prominent programs. News reports made it seem like he was out the door. Ended up with a raise. Seems like it's not just Rhule and Holgerson that are fans of the guy.

His contract was expired. He needed an extension to remain employed.

Ah, I figured he had one more year. In the long run buying out an assistant’s contract (if you you think he needs to be let go) isn’t that big of a financial hit. Pretty much pocket change in today’s CFB…

Nice fat pay raise and extension because our running back room is stacked, which is why we have no transfers in for this season to replace Dowdell … or something🤔🤨

Or maybe he has compromising photos of someone🤓😝

I'm ambivalent about this I guess. I don't think he's done anything to justify the kind of raise he got but so be it. It's a tough deal when you have players making more than an assistant coach.

I think it's hard to keep in mind how badly Satt's schemes and play-calling hurt the offense. Mind-bottling.

In 2024, NU got Dowdell from the portal. There were no new RBs listed as commits in 2024 per Rivals. In 2025, Parker (5.9 4*, no. 6 all-purpose RB nationally) and Booth (5.8 4*) signed. Dowdell was also a blue chip out of HS (5.9 4*, no. 6 RB nationally). That's three blue chip RBs in the past two years. Booth is a top 30 rated RB in this class. NU now has two smaller all-purpose backs and two bigger backs. Barthel has the room looking as good as it has in years. No Burkhead, Helu and Abdullah, but beggars can't be choosers.

Where are you guys getting 3 year contract? The article says 2 years through 26-27 season.
You are correct. Apologize. I mentioned it in reference to the post I was responding to that mentioned it. I should have double verified my reference. I'm as bad as the fake news

One thing you’ll almost never see in the bio with a legit HC or OC:

RBs coach
Had never thought about this before. Scrubbed all 32 NFL OC's and only 3 (Jim Bob Cooter, Indianapolis Colts and Joe Lombardi, Denver Broncos, Todd Monken, Baltimore Ravens) had Running Backs Coach listed in their rap sheet. Majority were QB coaches, receiver coaches, passing game coordinators. A couple OL coaches, 1 LB coach.

I imagine 30 years ago, more OCs came from the OL/RB routes. But with the league being a passing league today, I'm not surprised to see many RB coaches have a lower ceiling.
