Next season Ron and Geo will be gone.
Does Caleb have another season, or is he done?
Jaden is a mystery to me and a big (?).
I think Ralph is done.

Looks like Paul, Cliff, Dean, Aundre, Mag, Jalen, and Oskar.
Coming in Simpson looks to me like a player and maybe Woolfolk can bang for a few minutes.

Of these nine: We may want/need/hope for significant minutes from the two frosh: Derek to hold his own on D and a bit of a scoring option; Woolfolk for toughness (hope the kid has hands). If Jaden’s back and can work his way off the bench, that’s a plus.

And then, of course, there’s the transfer and “juco” markets!

Sound about right?

If Caleb did come back, would he count towards the scholarship count? I believe Geo doesn’t currently. Otherwise, I’d like to see us go after a scoring SG in the portal along with a PF. If Jaden comes back we may not necessarily need a SG but still could be useful. If we are looking JuCo for that, it’s alright but I’d rather transfers, and I feel in probably Cliffs last season Pike would try and get him some good teammates out of respect.

Rutgers will lose approximately 28 points with the departure of Baker and Harper. They better bring in a juco or a portal transfer that can score in double figures.Cliff status also is in question although most people believe he needs another year of college play.

Their shots might be distributed to more than 2 players who are already here, like Cliff, Paul, Reiber, Mag and Hyatt for example.

It’s Ron’s and Geo’s shooting percentages we have to replace (in particular Ron’s percentage from the arc), and their defense, plus Ron’s rebounding and Geo’s assists.

I believe other guys will step up to fill those needs, but you’re right, one good portal guy could be the difference. As mentioned elsewhere I’d love to have Coleman Hawkins here.

My good internet friend @goru7 might point out that the "new Paul" gobbles up some of that "lost PPG". Harper's scoring from that slot on the floor will be tough to replace, but the "replacement PPG" of a 2 guard that plays 33ish MPG exceeds what Geo is giving us on average night.

Maybe I am overestimating the ease of finding a shooting guard in the portal that will be a good teammate, defend and put points on the board.

As I said before...I am very bullish about next year if you give me Paul, Cliff, Mag, Jalen, Caleb and Dean.

GRF, I am glad you have finally realized how good Paul is. You said forever that he was too slow and couldn't play defense. I told you since he was in high school and I saw him play over 10 games how good he was. He took a back seat to our veterans and hardly shot the ball. Now we see the real Paul. He is one outstanding player. I think he will score much more next season and will still be getting over 6 assists a game.

Paul seems to have really turned the corner on offense. His defense has improved a bit Year over Year and will likely get a little better again going into next season. He does some things well on defense - other things not as well but he’s more than adequate with a good surrounding defensive cast. If Caleb returns he’s a very good complement to Paul’s game on that side of the ball. I really hope we get Caleb back because the portal isn’t always the best place to find lock down defenders.

In early season, I think Paul TRIED to be the Paul we see lately.. but the ball rolled around and off the rim way too often, defying odds in many cases.. and that must have hurt his confidence.

He rarely throws up that weak.. "oh, I am going to be blocked" JUNK he did early season. He works harder to get it off (or PASSING) while allowing for the challenge instead of rushing it.

All he needs to add is going up strong and seeking contact and drawing a foul while avoiding a charge. We have seen too many of those lame calls where PM or Harper's shoulder may get in the way of a defender fouling him while going up.
