There were some telling quotes from Ruud in the spring about what Roberts needed to do over the summer. Sounding like he didn't listen.

Yeah this one stings a bit. Barnett and Will Jackson leaving sucks but Avery Roberts leaving stings. This is a redshirt freshman that has a ton of potential to be a great LB. Sucks he’s not sticking it out and working as hard as the coaches wanted. They could of made something special out of him.

I don't think it stings as much as you think. Talent yes, but if we are creating a culture and he can't adapt to it, it's not a loss.

I agree. It's amazing to me when talented kids leave so early in their careers. I get it, but man they're still so young, have plenty of time to adjust their attitudes (if that's the case here) and to prove themselves.

Agree there. If he’s not wanting to put in the work to make himself better, then so be it. Just sucks seeing a kid with that type of talent refusing to work hard is all. What a waist.

He may have a ton of potential, but if he doesn't have the desire to work he will never reach that potential -- in which case all that potential does this team no good.

Colin Miller moving inside and gaining praise probably had a lot to do with this. Another person passing him up on the depth chart

Damn. So Jalin Barnett is gone, and Avery Roberts is gone? That's two 4-star players. I get it, neither one has had much of an impact yet (Im not even sure Barnett played), but the potential there was supposed to be quite high.

Oh well. We still have good players with way better coaches, and hopefully the recruiting and development going on will pay dividends soon.

What do you all think the reason is for these kids leaving so close to the season? Not working hard enough? Bad attitudes? Can't catch on to the playbook fast enough? Wouldn't start?

It does hurt a little in the "what if?" department when apparently talented players leave. But... it seems like part of our problem in the past has been carrying non-contributing players on the roster for years. Especially when comparing NU to successful programs. These young men are human beings and I wish the best for all of them, but it's a dog-eat-dog industry and I like seeing guys leave who will hopefully fit better elsewhere. Good luck to them and I hope they land on their feet.

I'm not bothered. Not everyone is going to pan out. Every player you offer is taking a chance. Not everything is just down to "he couldn't fit in or didn't work hard enough". You simply have X amount of spots and if you are on the outside looking in, you are going to make the best decision for you.

Unless a player comes out and says why he left, I'm not going guess his reasons.

The best you can do is load up on talented guys who have all the tools and then see who puts it all together. We sure seem to be seeing the signs of competition being there and how it sorts out a roster.

Damn, that just sucks man. I was in their shoes recently with an employer. But that's the nature of the beast- this is big time football and Frost wants to win. This level takes extra sacrifice and dedication, and not everyone is wired like that. But the staff laid it out pretty clearly that there would be competition and an increased emphasis on getting stronger over the summer with S&C.

Frost has been down this road before at Northern Iowa, Oregon and UCF-- and those programs I'd say turned out okay while he was there. Though he hasn't coached a game here yet, I think we can trust he knows what he's doing. And the way he handled the transition from UCF to Nebraska was about as genuine as I've ever seen. So, if anything, there's a high chance he'll be genuine with these kids as they go through this transition.

Well, as much as we would all like to think there is intense competition for some spots, we have to understand our overall quality and depth isn’t where it needs to be to consistently compete for championships. My point - if it’s difficult now to get a spot, I hope it becomes even more difficult in the future.

Maybe you have a lot of knowledge about his star potential. I only know recruiting analysts were impressed. But being an outstanding high school athlete doesn’t necessarily translate to college and beyond. Otherwise Bubba Starling would be an MLB all-star by now instead of a career .230 minor leaguer.

He's still only a freshman. If he's still doing that as an upperclassmen I can understand trying to get rid of him, but he would have had plenty of time to turn things around.

This is pretty disappointing if true. Roberts was probably our top recruit that year and obviously had a lot of potential. If it's a situation where the kid wanted out, fine don't let the door hit you on the way out. But if it's a situation where we kind of forced him out, I don't agree with it. I think you should give a kid with as much potential as he has to turn things around.

First, I still have seen nothing other than on this main board that he is supposedly gone. There has been nothing on RSS. So this may all be about nothing.

Second, I don’t think the coaching staff would ‘force’ him out. I think, if anything, they would give him a reality check by probably placing him on scout team. That would mean he would be at least 3rd string, if not worse. Ruud tried to motivate him after Spring. It seemed to kind of work, but you could still tell he wasn’t even close physically to the rest of the linebackers when Fall camp started.

Will Jackson left after he was placed on scout team and saw that he wasn’t going to start or probably even play. That may have been more of a ‘force’ out than Roberts would be this year. Avery is a little different because he is still young, and he could still redshirt this year if he showed some motivation and that he was ready to truly commit to the team and football. I guess if he is gone, that tells you he is lacking in work ethic.

I believe it was Avery Roberts that Benning suggested last week is "on the outside looking in." He seemed to suggest it wasn't just outside, but way outside.

Was Avery the one with her brother who was a running back? Is it possible that he wants to go where his brother went? I don’t even remember where his brother went…

Or am I thinking of someone else?

He's below Weinmaster on the depth chart. Was told what he needed to do and by all accounts, did not do it. Playing time is not generally handed out on any team and certainly not by HCSF.

Looks like they have Mo and Young, Honas and Miller, with Weinmaster in reserve.

Do Hannah and Henrich project as ILBs?
Yes. But take that with the grain of salt that I'd have thought Miller was going to be an OLB based on what he did as a 4-3 rush end on scout team...but they're being recruited as ILBs.
