Hummel said on the broadcast that Indiana got to make the choice and sent Hyatt to the line when mulchahy got ejected. Johnson said on the radio postgame that it was rutgers that chose Hyatt there . Which was it ? It kills me when analysts don’t know the rules.
Big shots by Hyatt , who got killed in the game thread for his turnover earlier.

They are both right. Rutgers picks the player to replace the ejected player (johnson). Indiana gets to choose which of the 5 on the court will shoot the FT's (Hummel). It's not like Indiana can choose Luke Nathan to replace Mulcahy and make him shoot a FT.

Okay, I thought Hummels of Austin Johnson were being produced. (Pretty cool idea, actually.)

Hummel is on the air every day of the week. I think he does 90% of all college basketball games.

Google told me this: If a flagrant foul—penalty (2) or punching foul is assessed and the offended player is unable to attempt his free throws because of injury, the substitute will be selected by his coach. The two free throws may be attempted by the substitute or any of the four remaining players in the game.

So substituting injury with ejection - Pike would have chosen Hyatt to go in and Indiana chose him to shoot.
