This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone based on the fact we hired him from Syracuse less than 2 weeks into his tenure there.

He sure ain't afraid to shop around. Though his stock is higher than its ever been and it feels pretty good the first time "I could be making that much/coaching there" goes from hope to possibility to reality. Dern Merlit was enamored with hearing how much he was wanted/worth elsewhere as well.

I still find it interesting that AD’s who’s programs are losing Millions of Dollars like Oregon and LSU, would spend even more money on a guy who may be a one hit wonder.

Something tells me “losing money” is a matter of paperwork and even if they do, it probably qualifies them for more govt money. But I agree with you.

It’s important to remember that Arnett is a young coach who is getting a chance to talk to big time programs for the first time. If Oregon, LSU, Michigan, Texas, etc. want to talk to him, he’d be a fool not to take the call. If nothing else, he gets to meet people and build more of a network.

It’s also important to remember that he just signed a three year extension a few weeks ago with a buyout north of $2 million. An assistant coach who is “looking to get out” doesn’t sign a contract with that buyout. No way.

Of course if a blue blood loves Arnett and is willing to pay the buyout, he could absolutely leave at any point. But we have ensured that it would be very expensive to buy him out AND bump his salary. LSU 247 mods have already said they don’t think LSU could realistically pull him because of the money.

Obviously Arnett will leave one day. It could be tomorrow, it could be 2-3 years from now. But this notion that he is itching to get on the first train out of town is dumb, considering the circumstances of his new contract.

Yea, but that's a little different. Its basically like he was never a coach at Syracuse. Doubt he even met all the defensive players and certainly didn't even get started implementing his system so there was no transition the players had to go through. Was hoping with Leach we might could get a little stability on the defensive side and at least keep a coordinator 2-3 years minimum. That is something we NEVER got with Mullen. However, looking like more of the same with Arnett apparently interviewing with every P5 program out there.

He’s got a heck of an agent apparently. How many other coordinators with 1 year of experience are getting blue blood interviews or even discussion.

We might get another year out of him if we are lucky

He was DC at San Diego State for two years and they had excellent defenses.

It’s no shock that he’s a hot name. He’s got an impressive resume and is only 34.

Being our DC is a sneaky good job for a few reasons, but it’s kind of a double edged sword.

Great exposure- You literally couldn’t have better national exposure unless you were at a top 15 program in America. So, your name is going to be out there.

Expectations/perceptions- MSU has reasonable expectations and from the outside looking in, if you have a top 5 defense in the SEC at MSU, you are seen as a genius.

Talent- We typically have good defensive talent to work with and a history of having good defenses.

Track record- Our recent track record of DCs is pretty impressive. Several former DCs got jobs at big programs and are now P5 head coaches. Basically, if you do a good job here, you’re going places.

This is why we are able to consistently attract good up and coming DCs. The flip side is, the same things that make the job attractive also make it difficult for us to keep young DCs. It’s not the worst problem in the world to have.

If LSU is willing to pay the buyout plus offer $2 million per year, that is definitely something worth watching. Would I personally want to coach with Ed O right now? No, but I can see the appeal. Being the DC at LSU is a top 5 DC job in the country.

Well just a week or so ago Rosey was saying Orgeron wouldn't even be that interested in Arnett because he doesn't want to move away from a defense with a 4 man front.

Being a State fan is pretty damn cruel sometimes. This story is the talk of every one of our boards but finding much of anything on LSU's board concerning Arnett is like finding a needle in a haystack. They couldn't care less.

LSU will skate. They'll get a few scholarship reductions and some "probation". Nothing that would keep them from recruiting 5 star talent.

I mean, what he did with yalls defense this year, especially when someone really digs into it and sees the issues/injuries/opt-outs in the Secondary, was really impressive.

If you ever want to know if you’ve got a good coach, ask yourself how your rival would feel if he leaves. If they’d be excited, you’ve got a good coach. And I know I certainly wouldn’t mind seeing Arnett move on down the road.

Of course, I don’t get to very excited because it sounds like he’s possibly moving to our real rival***

Rumor is LSU is will to pay a good bit to get him.

What a huge disadvantage it is for State that multiple schools within the same conference can just basically cherry pick your best coaches.

I'd be worried about what kind of situation I was walking into, but I can see the appeal. They surely have more talent on that roster than the one he inherited here. Obviously in hindsight we had some really good talent that people didn't know about this year, but we still had to play some guys that are borderline SEC players. IF he went to LSU, he'd take over what was a pretty mediocre defense in 2020 that most likely has the pieces to immediately be a top defense, if Orgeron will back him up on culture issues. If things worked out, it would be a very visible turnaround that will almost immediately make him a viable head coaching candidate for any non-blue blood team. But it's oddly probably more appealing because they had issues this year. If they hadn't, it would just be about money, as he'd probably get more credit keepign MSU good than LSU good. If he were to take it, the question would be whether he is given the control (or backup from Orgeron) to address whatever culture issues contributed to the problem this year.

Or perhaps he realizes that buyouts are practically meaningless in terms of preventing coaches from leaving, and knows if a big school still wants him they will negotiate it down to what they will pay, and still hire him.

Coaching is weird. How is it okay for someone to openly shop themselves around for other jobs and still expect to keep theirs if it doesn’t work out?

Even Mullen didn’t publicly interview for other jobs across the country.

And we can't recruit against the top half of the SEC. It's pretty incredible that we have been able to compete as we have over the last 10 years. At some point though, will the cards eventually be stacked too high against us?

You missed the point...

Yes a big school could pay the buyout if they wanted to. If he gets an attractive offer from one of those schools, he very well might take it. I never said an elite program could not or would not be able to hire Arnett.

But a coach who is itching to leave town ASAP would not sign a contract with that kind of buyout. He’s not leaving us for a lateral move- it would have to be for a program that is a clear step up like LSU.

Of course if LSU does hire him, they will have to write us a check for over $2 million, and we’d have a nice financial starting point to go get the next guy.

...and that we have the smallest budget in the SEC... and that we are smack dab in the middle of Bama, LSU, and Auburn's recruiting territory, not to mention Ole Miss and their recruiting desperation - I mean, aspiration - to recruit with the big boys.
