If there was ever a game that lived up to the hype, this was it.

In honor of the prevailing Midshipmen:

Some of my archived Navy related photos in honor of their win today:

First of all, yes, loved the game. I also enjoyed watching the HBCU bowl game right before it.

I will also state the obvious: not a lot of top-shelf playing or coaching in either game.

But I'm saying that for a reason: you don't root for Army or Navy or South Carolina State because you expect them to be football powerhouses - you root for them because of who they are, what they stand for, and your relationship with them. Honestly, this is why, if Northwestern ever leaves the Big Ten and just plays regional football in a conference that doesn't exist yet, against Iowa, Wisconsin, and NIU...with barely any transfer players and a modest payroll...I will be perfectly happy with it.

I have attended 3 Army-Navy games. They are truly special- the entrance of the Cadets and Midshipmen , announcing the company commanders by name and hometown, the flyovers, the Golden Knights, the"prisoner exchange", teams "sing first" winners "sing last" and finally the game with players absolutely committed, not for NIL now , but for their teammates and service.

Games at the Military Academies are also special. Entering Michie Stadium one reads the Marshall Plaque, Army Marine Corps Stadium features names of famous naval and Marine battles. You will get the same feeling if you ever attend New Market Day at VMI, when the 10 VMI cadets killed at New Market are remembered, Taps is played and 2000 Keydets march by "Virginia Mourning Her Dead" the monument and gravestone of the fallen boys( In 1864 the VMI cadets, composed of boys and teens marched over 200 miles from Lexington VA to New Market , joining a small Confederate force that defeated a much larger Union Army-see the movies "The Horse Soldiers" and "The Field of Lost Shoes")

People want college football for what it was - not this dirty NIL/transfer portal/mercenary nonsense. Even the “player empowerment” crowd is waking up and starting to push back. Now we need the NCAA to show some spine and push this back into the courts.
NIL has gone well beyond its intended purpose of compensating players for their name, image and likeness. Can NCAA reign it back, or to keep with the equestrian terminology, get the horses back in the barn?

No it hasn't, not really, and no they most definitely cannot. If there is a CBA some day that might cause changes, but those changes won't be players getting less money.

Oh good god. You’re one of these “player empowerment” people? It all makes sense now. Opinion invalided immediately.

Alaska Wildcat is exactly correct that was the intent of NIL - starting with the video games. It’s been completely hijacked since then by greedy attorneys and brain dead athletes who will likely go broke and never graduate.

College sports is about to die but hey at least some random guy got a bag!!! Fight the power!!!

I guess if you think somebody who deserves the players deserve a piece of the multi-billion dollar industry their efforts support is a "player empowerment" person, whatever the **** that means, okay.

There was no "intent" behind NIL. The NCAA had years and years to try to create an NIL and compensation system that had intent during the Mark Emmert years and it decided instead to stand still on the tracks and get run over by the oncoming train. Partially due to that inaction, NIL was instituted instead by the courts with no particular intent or any leftover ability to seriously regulate it. There was no limited intent of any kind in that.

Now, with the House settlement, the middleman is cut out and direct payments to the players from the schools for the purposes of playing for that school are the order of the day. Signed off on and agreed by all the schools. That's the deal

College is supposed to be an internship while you get your formal education to prepare yourself for the real world.

Players were already getting an expensive education, free housing, food, clothes, etc., not to mention a network that basically guaranteed success… but yes they were deprived lol.

Everyone was down to let players get paid for being in the video games, their jersey sales, corporate events, etc. What we have now is the wild west and will kill college sports as we know it soon enough - barring someone showing some spine from the NCAA/government.

Just like your inaccurate beliefs about NU's academic standards, you're idealizing a fantasy world you made up in your head.
