They've tried all robot balls and strikes in the minors, and noboy liked it.
They didn't like the pitch clock when it started. They didn't like the designated hitter at first (or in the case of the National League for years). People don't like change is what I would blame for that. I used to play stickball as a kid and we drew a box on a wall. If the ball was in the box it was a strike. They do it in wiffle ball now. I think if a hitter knows what is going to be called a strike it will help offense.

I would have loved a game where Maddox and Glavine and John Franco would have to actually throw a ball over the plate. I still think that's why their post season success was much less than their in season success. They made them throw the ball over the plate in the post season. Which is unfair to them also since they now have to pitch differently than they did all year.

What did they not like? Does it pick up a breaking pitch catching part of the plate or does it not catch the black?
The black is not the plate. You can't catch the black. It was put there for safety. As the pitch in the video any part of the ball touches the white, it is a strike.

I looked this up and you are correct sir. I don't why I doubted you except for the fact that I have always heard the phrase, "painting the black", so I assumed, uh oh, that it was part of the strike zone.

How ridiculous. He touched his hat twice I don't think the manager saw him touch it the first time. If he did, and still thought that wasn't fast enough he's crazy and he needs to be tethered to the dugout so he can't interrupt the game.

Imagine arguing knowing it was a strike. WANTING the missed call.

Just let ABS call balls and strikes and be done with it. Plate ump has enough other stuff to keep him busy. Balks, HBP, dropped strike 3 (dumbest rule in sports), batter interference, catcher interference, plays at the plate, foul off the batter, foul tips. pitch clock.

They didn't like how it reacted to breaking balls down in the zone and the looping ones that were near the top of the zone.

Also, there's no black on an actual home plate.

allow me a 20 second rant here.

WHY THE HELL are we old men with less than average eyesight impact a game of PROFESSIONAL ball players with ELITE eyesight?

I'm sorry but if you miss a certain %, you are not qualified to be an ump, go find another profession. You are paid to get it right and do so an ELITE level. These players are the best in the world and you got some dumb Joe Schmo wrecking a game, why the hell is this allowed.

What this is showing is how much better MLB batters can see than many of the umpires can.

I wouldn't be surprised if they implement automatic ball/strike calls next season. Umpires are already getting tired of all the embarrassment.
