I keep reading that if we get ranked in the AP poll, it will be the first time since 1978 or something like that. Is it true that we never got ranked during the Roy Hinson years in the early 1980s?

Correct

Our last ranking was number 16 (or 15?)) in March 1979 in James Bailey

Roy Hinson led teams got close, but never got in (back then it was top 20
And not top 25)m

In Roy Hinson junior year..we were 5-1 with wins over top ten UCLA, and St. John’s and played North Carolina in the garden and the eventual national champs. An upset there would have got us ranked. We hung tough for a half before Carolina knocked off a cold shooting Rutgers team

In Roy Hinson senior year...We were 20-4...and lost to St Bonnie in late February in a close game on the road that prevented us from being ranked

We also got really close a couple of other times and failed

1990-1991...started 5-0 and lost at home on a Saturday espn noon to Princeton at the RAC.

1991-1992...started 3-0 and lost nail bitter to 12 ranked seton hall at the RAC

1998-1999....started 7-1...and lost one of the ugliest to watch games in RAC history in billet and hodgeson senior year to temple and John Chaney, something like 52-38.

But today, is the first legit time in 20 years that we have to get in the top 25 with a win ...

Good research Shack.
Unless you’re an old Rutgers nut like me, it’s very difficult to name any of Roy Hinson’s teammates.
Yet most of us can remember the starting 5 of our final four team, including our 6th and 7th men...Abdel Anderson and Mark Coniln

Rankings are fake, they are a constructed thing, like minutes on a clock. I can make a ranking, you can, and the general public has anointed a group of people to do theirs and then combines them to make an AP ranking. But none of it has any positive or negative effect of whether the ball goes in the Orange hoop or not

Was a kid, but still remember all of the names of ‘76 team. Also lots of trivial stuff, like Palko started until the Penn game at the Garden, that Kleinbaum usually got the 100th point (team averaged well over 90 points a game), that win over St Johns in ECAC prevented us from playing Indiana in opening round of NCAA, etc..
But it was the ‘75 team, like the 2005 FB team, and this year’s hoops team, that led the way to the national picture. The opening win at ranked Hawaii, I was there, and most notably the 29 point swing at #14 Lasalle (led by Kobe’s dad) were the most memorable. In last ten minutes they went from down 15 to winning by 14..Rutgers was ranked for the first time during that season

I am not a rankings proponent but it still is a time stamp that truly reflects on a national level. If you are a coaching staff and you are out this spring and summer and go to an AAU event as Pike and the staff will do, you are visible to parents that can say Rutgers staff is watching XYZ recruiting target.

If you can add the mentions that RU broke into the Top 25 for x amount of weeks, while also breaking a losing season streak, breaking a post season streak and potentially getting to a .500 or better record in B1G competition, all in 1 season, those are measurables to people in college basketball circles.

The 3 writers that gave us votes last week were Cecil Hurt (Alabama) #22, David Cloninger (South Carolina) #23, and Seth Davis (CBS-SI) #25. 62 NRs

Not to derail this thread, but our starting lineup was something like:

1 Brian Ellerbe
2 Rich Brunson
3 Kevin Black
4 Clarence Tillman
5 Roy Hinson

I think Chris Remley (who had a really awesome gf back then) came off the bench.

In the ‘80 and 81 seasons, Kelvin Troy was our big upperclassman and a beast and was our 4. In the 82 and 83 seasons, John Battle was the underclassman and the off the bench spark plug with his speed and tenacious D.

Great fun back in my school days!

some of us don’t put much stock into rankings I think the people who do are the recruits. We need to show that ranking to pull in some of those players. And, it should go without saying, getting to the dance is huge

I had the pleasure of meeting Mike this past September at a RU football tailgate. I mentioned to him that there are still many fans that treasure that memory and his and the teams efforts.
Seemed like a nice guy

The rankings may not be accurate in terms of the relative strength of teams. However it's a measure of how strong the teams are perceived to be, and that would be a great accomplishment.

a lot of pollsters are not in the NY / NJ or B10 area so it may be tough

Hoping Feinstein, Dauster, and the guythat covers the illini give us votes. Vitale also may throw us a vote.

Not sure we will get much from ACC, SEC, or B12 country since they are probably not watching BTN to actually see us play.

Mike sits in the seat behind me at the RAC. He is a wonderful guy. I hope we get ranked to end the streak but somehow I think most writers still don't respect RU yet.

I say we are not ranked. These guys are morons and we get no respect. 14-4 and 5-2 (Second place in B1G), is unbelievable.

You missed Chris Nieberlein. He started with Tillman at forward, probably the slowest pair of forwards in the country when Black was moved to guard.

Hinson’s team were the RU teams of my youth. I remember them well:

Brunson
Ellerbee
Battle
Black
Tillman
Nei

I thought I heard one of the announcers say yesterday we were in during the 84-85 season. Guess they were wrong. I trust your points and can't find the week to week polls that year. I also didn't realize it was top 20 then but I can see that now. Interesting.

Just found a great season recap that I posted link to if anyone wants to reminisce....wow.
And yup...Ap weekly results across top says NADA.

In that sense money is also a construct, but it enables one to do many things because people respond to its presence or absence.

If we had beast Illinois we'd be in the 14-17 range...but will take 23 it's a start. Not sure how SHU is so high when we crushed them
