A bell-ringing ceremony planned at West Virginia University will be held in remembrance of three students who died this summer, including one from Jefferson County.

The ceremony is scheduled for about noon Friday at Oglebay Plaza on the downtown campus in Morgantown. Students honored will be Parker Baranowski, Michael Marcus and Ryan Mumaw.

Mumaw, a 21-year-old junior from Charles Town, was shot and killed July 19. A 2013 graduate of Washington High School, he was a business major at the university. Three individuals have been charged in connection with Mumaw's death.

It depends...were the bells made in America?

Why would I?
While I feel terrible for the victim and his family....I might have a problem with WVU honoring a drug dealer that lost his life during a $3,500 deal and had guns in his car while making the deal when he was shot.

Well those details might be important enough to share in the initial post don't you think? Is that true or speculation? Should they do it for someone that commits suicide? I know they have as I attended it.

What I posted was taken from many media reports. The Jefferson County Sheriff said the shooter killed the deceased who was selling the maryjane. He described it as "a drug deal gone bad". I assumed that many who post here knew the background on the shooting. I see nothing wrong with doing it for a suicide.

What is the purpose for this honor? Is it intended as the beginning of a tradition to honor all deceased WVU students of the past year or just the summer? Do you not think it would be important to disclose why begin with these three in particular?

They do it periodically throughout the year - not sure how often or how they go about setting it up.

If it has been done in the past without question, why ask now? Or, is this the normal practice to get approval?

They get approval from WVU office I'm sure...someone comes out and says something and I believe they read the name(s) and then they ring the bell.

Then, I see no reason to interrupt the recognition of WVU students who have lost their lives.
