I’ve only had it once, but I have vivid memories of even a drink of water feeling like glass shards were going down your throat.

Gotta wonder if maybe he was just severely dehydrated and/or malnourished. Plus, like you said, strep tends to coincide with other issues at times. In my case, I had mono when I got it

Once? Lucky bastard.

I probably had it double digits as a kid, and a handful of times as an adult. Symptoms can vary wildly, but the swallowing glass was a clear sign for me.

That's what I was thinking. According to this....it depends.

Strep throat is contagious for about 2-3 weeks in individuals that do not take antibiotics. However, individuals that take antibiotics for strep throat usually are no longer contagious about 24 hours after initiating antibiotic therapy. The bacteria that cause strep throat can be transmitted person-to-person by direct contact, especially from mucus droplets from the mouth and indirect contact, such as kissing and sharing utensils or drinking cups.

It’s contagious if you share a drink. That’s why small kids pass it around so much because of saliva.
